What do you think of when you picture Greek Island beaches? To me, it’s always too difficult to visualize because there is a huge variety in their make-up, just like the islands themselves. I have no trouble, however, seeing myself on a sailing boat hopping around the Med, stopping off at the best Greek Island beaches. Sometimes I will choose a secluded one with no road access to let free my inner castaway, other times it will be a party beach where the waft of olive oil, fresh fish, lemon and rosemary mixes with the smell of suntan oil and fruity cocktails. It’s easy to dream so have a look at these real Greek Island beaches to visit, to make those dreams a reality.

Red Beach, Santorini

Red Beach, Santorini A famous romantic destination, Santorini has some of the most unique Greek Island beaches. If you like rugged romance you can’t beat Red Beach. So named for the soaring red lave cliffs that drop into the clear azure sea and the red and black volcanic sand, Red Beach is about a 10 minute walk from the popular tourist destination of Akrotiri. It’s a one of a kind destination. Not the best place for swimming, but snorkeling is good and it’s a fabulous place for sitting with a loved one to catch the sunset.

Balos Beach, Crete

Balos Beach, Crete Greek Island beaches should have exquisite scenery and this is true of Balos Beach. And you know how they say, no pain, no gain, well it definitely applies here. To reach the paradise of Balos Beach and it’s oh so clear lagoon, you have to drive a potholed road, dodging boulders. This seriously stunning corner of the Gramvousa Peninsula, near Kissamos in the far north west of Crete, is as good as any tropical beach. Beautiful crystalline water, super soft sand and corals all equal bliss in my book.

Firiplaka Beach, Milos

Firiplaka Beach, Milos Some places just ooze beauty. Milos’s oozing is already well known to the world thanks to the stunning statue of the Venus de Milo that stands in the Louvre. So if it’s classic beauty of similar ilk that stirs your seaside passion, Firiplaka Beach will more than assuage it. The curvy blue bay is backed by auburn cliffs and rocks litter the foreshore and the silver white sand. If you need some shade, there’s a huge rock in the shallows, which even has a small opening at its base so you can make like Aphrodite and swim through. Gorgeous.

Myrtos Beach, Kefalonia

Myrtos Beach, Kefalonia Is it right and fair that there should be so many pieces of gorgeousness in the beaches of the Greek islands? Well with about 6,000 islands, the law of averages is heavily stacked. Among them is the stunner that is Myrtos Beach on the island of Kefalonia, the setting for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin; in fact you’ll recognize Myrtos as the location for the bomb explosion scene. Myrtos is a sublime crescent of white coarse, pebbly sand and vivid turquoise water encased by high white cliffs, where you can often see goats clambering their precarious way to reach the salty grasses.

Apella Beach, Karpathos

Apella Beach, Karpathos Karpathos is a small mountainous island in the Dodecanese group. Home to less than 6,000 people, the population swells in summer with visitors looking for the best Greek Island beaches. Regarded as the most beautiful on the island, Apella Beach is on the east coast. Although easiest to reach by boat, there’s also road access. The beach is a blinder, set in a bay surrounded by mountains topped by pine forests. Terrific for swimming and snorkeling, there are sun beds to rent to prevent the small pebbles leaving their imprint on your butt!

Ambelas Beach, Paros

Ambelas Beach, Paros Ambelas Beach is everything you imagine typical Greek Island beaches to be: it sits next to a small, picturesque fishing village, slightly isolated from the bigger settlements; you can sit and watch the fishing boats leave and come home and enjoy the catch of the day in the delicious fish taverns; or, you can simply enjoy the total rest and relaxation offered by the golden sand, clear blue water and tranquility.

Elafonisi, Crete

Elafonisi, Crete Wouldn’t you just love to be able to wade through shallow water at low tide to reach the beach of your dreams? Well, at Elafonisi you can do exactly that. Elafonisi is a protected nature reserve and it sits just 200 meters off the southwestern corner of Crete, the largest of all the Greek Islands. The southeastern shore of Elafonisi is rocky with tiny inlets but the beach area around the limpid green-blue waters of the lagoon is picture postcard perfect. The sand is white but in places it takes on a pinkish hue thanks to the millions of fragments of broken sea shells.

It was such a difficult task to pick just a few Greek Island beaches to share with you. I hope I have done justice to these little pockets of paradise that grace the Mediterranean. Have you been to any of the Greek Islands? Do you have a favorite?
