Via Beauty of Madagascar | Most ...
Tsingy is the "stone forest" of Madagascar This is an unusually red-colored area - most is grey limestone. - as you'll see later.
The Red Tsingy of Antsiranana is a unique geological formation located in northern Madagascar. It is a spectacular sight of towering limestone spires that have been eroded over time to create a forbidding and surreal landscape. The formation is made of a type of limestone called “tsingy” which is highly porous and fragile and has been weathered by wind and rain into its current shape.
The red color comes from the presence of iron oxide in the soil and rock. While the surrounding area is mostly grey limestone, the Red Tsingy stands out due to its unique color. It is a popular tourist destination, with visitors being able to explore the area on foot or by car.
The Red Tsingy is also an important habitat for many species of animals and plants. It is home to a variety of birds, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as several species of endemic plants. It is also a conservation area, with the local government taking steps to protect the area and its wildlife.
