Smuggler’s Notch, Vermont With one of the homiest atmospheres of all US ski resorts, this resort is known for being very family friendly and offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding on the eastern side. Not only is there excellent skiing, but Smuggler’s Notch offers a full menu of winter fun! If the kids aren’t into skiing, there are programs like movies, magic and science shows that will keep them busy while the parents take on the slopes. Stay in a comfortable mountainside condo and eat at one of the several dining locations.


Sugarloaf, Maine

Sugarloaf, Maine This resort is known for its laid-back atmosphere as well as its world-class skiing. Sugarloaf is the largest ski area east of the Rocky Mountains, and offers the only lift-serviced above-treeline skiing in the east. With 1,056 developed, well-groomed skiable acres, there’s something for everyone. If there’s not enough snow, they’ll create it for you! Towards the end of the season be sure to catch Reggaefest, several performances are free.

What is lacks in its modest vertical runs it makes up for in atmosphere; the locals are friendly and there are plenty of amenities. Kids can take lessons and participate in many of the resort’s kid-friendly programs such as Mountain Adventures, while parents head off to the slopes. Night skiing, spa treatments, snowboarding, inner tubing, the Mountain Coaster, and sleigh rides make this a winter stop to remember. Make a long weekend or vacation of it and stay at one of several cozy lodges.


Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire Another great kid-friendly resort where there’s great skiing and plenty of other winter activities to keep families busy. Lots of easy trails, but a few for more advanced skiers as well. It’s one of the more scenic resorts, with stunning views of Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. Other winter activities include tubing, sleigh rides, dog sledding, and a kids snowmobiling park.


Whiteface, New York

Whiteface, New York A host of the Winter Olympics, this resort is full of great ski runs and jaw dropping views to accompany its impressive history. Skiers enjoy the 3,000’ vertical drop, and nature lovers adore the view atop Little Whiteface looking toward Big Whiteface. Even if you don’t ski, Whiteface is a great winter destination! Tour the Olympic Museum and other Olympic areas, ride bobsleds and gondolas, go tubing or ice skating, or take a luge ride!


Sunday River, Maine

Sunday River, Maine This large resort has 8 peaks, with slopes for beginner to very challenging. Some slopes are groomed, others are not. With so much to do, you’ll want to stay more than a couple of days at one of the many hotels in the area. Besides the variety of skiing options available, take advantage of activities like snowmobiling, scenic lifts rides on the Chondola or on ziplines, ice skating and snow tubing. If skiing the South Ridge, check out the Sunday River Sugaring House, dedicated to Maine’s maple syrup traditions. Don’t forget to try your luck at the Oxford Casino, and watch out for Eddy the Yeti!
