1

See the Churches and Cathedrals

If you’re looking for things to do in Prague and you’re a fan of churches, then the city certainly won’t disappoint. There are plenty to choose from but the absolute must-see is St Nicholas’s Church, which was built in the 18th century. Mozart himself played the organ in the church, which gives you an idea of its importance. St Vitus’s Cathedral is also beautiful and well worth a visit, and it’s free!

2

Visit Prague Castle

Prague Castle has a history stretching back more than a thousand years, although its current château-like appearance dates from the mid 18th century. It’s famous because an incident in the former offices of the Chancellery of Bohemia here marked the start of the Thirty Years’ War. This is one of the best activities to do in Prague as it’s great for families and the changing of the guard takes place every hour.

3

Enjoy Some Music

One of the best ways to enjoy the music in Prague is to visit during one of the many music festivals. The Fringe Theatre Festival at the beginning of June features indoor and open-air music, theatre, comedy and dance. Or if jazz is your thing, then late October is the time to go as Prague hosts the week-long International Jazz Festival.

4

Visit the Museums and Galleries

Visiting the museums and galleries is certainly one of the best things to do in Prague. The most highly recommended art gallery is the National Gallery, which is housed in Sternberg Palace and has paintings by artists such as Rembrandt and Rubens. If you want to visit a museum, then you’ll be spoiled for choice as Prague has everything from the Museum of Communism to the Mozart Museum. For lovers of literature, there are museums and other sites commemorating Franz Kafka. There’s a terrific Jewish restaurant in the house where he was born, on the old Town Square.

5

Check out Wenceslas Square

This 750m-long boulevard is the hub of the action, particularly after dark. If you’re after activities to do in Prague at night, then Wenceslas Square is the place to go, with its many nightclubs, cinemas and restaurants. It also has an interesting history however: demonstrations against the Soviet army took place here in the 60s, and a student burned himself to death on the steps of the National Museum.

6

Visit the Old Town Hall

The Old Town Hall is actually a row of houses that was adapted over the centuries. The council chamber where Bohemian kings were elected is inside, while the tower gives views across the city. The star attraction is the Astronomical Clock, which shows, besides the time, the months and seasons, the course of the sun, the signs of the zodiac and the holidays of the Christian calendar.

7

Go on Some Excursions

When planning your visit to Prague it’s worth considering venturing out of the city a little. There are many fascinating locations within just an hour or two of the city centre, and there are coach companies that take groups on excursions. If you’re going to do one excursion then see Terezín: a Nazi ghetto and transit camp for the Jews. You can tour the barracks, cells and graves, while an exhibition tells you all about the camp and its victims. For something as equally macabre is the Sedlec Ossuary, a church built from human bones about 45 miles from Prague.

When visiting Prague, you'll find it has a little bit of something to suit everyone – there’s music, nightlife and plenty of culture. Keep in mind that there are many things to do just outside of the city centre too. With so many great things to do in Prague, what would you do first?
