Of all the very many glorious experiences to be had in Australia, the things to do in Queensland have to be among the best. I mean, who could argue against glorious weather, impressive scenery, stupendous beaches and some of Mother Nature’s most incredible creations. Let’s take a run around some of the best things to do in Queensland and see if you don’t agree with me that is is one of the best destinations in the world.

Explore the Great Barrier Reef

Explore the Great Barrier Reef There are many fantastic things to do in Queensland but the one you really shouldn’t miss out on is the opportunity to explore the only living organism that can be seen from outer space. The Great Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stretches along most of Queensland’s east coast, from the Torres Strait southwards to the area around Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island. The best way to explore this extraordinary coral reef system is to dive or snorkel in parts of it. However, you can also go on trips in glass-bottom boats, sail its waters or see it from way up high on a scenic flight.

Hit the Beach

Hit the Beach With its tropical to subtropical climate, Queensland is indeed Australia’s Sunshine State. There is no shortage of spectacular beaches here, from the busy tourist beaches in the south to secluded, unspoilt slices of paradise in the more remote areas of the north and the many islands offshore. The beaches are indeed one of the best attractions of Queensland and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world is Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. Consisting of almost pure silica, its fine, powdery sand is so white it will hurt your eyes unless you wear sunglasses. Stretching over more than 4 miles, this quiet beach is just the place to go to if you want to feel like a real castaway.

Become One with Nature

Become One with Nature Queensland offers many attractions and activities for nature lovers. The coastal areas are a habitat for a huge range of marine life, from whales that migrate along the coast in the winter months to sea turtles that come to the beaches to nest. However, the interior offers many exciting sights of Queensland. In many coastal areas you’ll find rainforests while the further inland you go, the drier the landscape becomes. Many of Australia’s iconic animals, from koalas to kangaroos, are found in the state’s numerous national and wildlife parks. You can go trekking, bushwalking or go on four-wheel-drive safaris almost anywhere in Queensland. Be mindful of warnings about wildlife here, though: Being eaten by a saltwater crocodile or stung by a box jellyfish is not necessarily the best way to become one with nature.

Learn about Aboriginal Culture

Learn about Aboriginal Culture The first inhabitants arrived in Queensland around sixty millennia ago. While some of their descendants moved into the rest of Australia, many stayed and continued their way of life for thousands of years. Today you can learn about Aboriginal culture and an ancient way of life by visiting one of the many cultural parks in the state, such as the award-winning Tjakupai Aboriginal Cultural Park near Cairns. There are excursions to Aboriginal sites like some of the oldest rock art in the country and to shell middens that have been around for centuries. Throughout the year you can attend cultural festivals where you can learn more about Aboriginal art, music, dance and storytelling and some cultural parks and centres have programmes that will teach you about herbal medicine, traditional food or skills like hunting with spears.

See Some Big Things

See Some Big Things Among the quirkier of things to do in Queensland is a trip to see the state’s Big Things. All over the state you’ll find oversized versions of foodstuffs, animals and objects ranging from boomerangs to gumboots. The Big Pineapple in Woombye is one of the oldest of these strange Australian attractions. Some, like Emerald’s Big Easel, are beautiful and awe-inspiring. Others verge on tackiness, but all of Queensland’s Big Things make great photo opportunities.

Quench Your Thirst in the Outback

Quench Your Thirst in the Outback For some people, Australia conjures up images of a man named Bruce, his mate Bruce and his other mate Bruce, all wearing hats with corks dangling from the brim and all holding a can of lager. If you want to meet the kind of men who inspired characters like Crocodile Dundee, you need to travel into Queensland’s Outback and visit the small towns here. Sooner or later the heat will drive you to the nearest pub, where the best way to quench your thirst is with a XXXX beer, pronounced ‘fourex’ and brewed in Brisbane since 1924.

Live It up in Brisbane

Live It up in Brisbane With all the many possible activities in Queensland, it’s easy to forget that the state is also home to a huge, vibrant city. Brisbane’s roughly 2 million inhabitants are friendly and laid-back, and you’re guaranteed a great time if you stay to explore the state capital. From historical buildings like Brisbane City Hall and the Commissariat Store to tranquil spaces like the City Botanical Gardens and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Brisbane offers something for everyone. It’s a great place to enjoy live music in a variety of genres and you can enjoy gourmet fare at one of the many top restaurants throughout the city.

It wasn’t easy to pick so few things to do in Queensland but I think give you a good flavour of what The Aussie Sunshine State offers. I’d love to hear recommendations from any readers in Queensland and any previous visitors.
