There is nothing quite like filling the car up with snacks, turning the music volume up to eleven and feeling the wind in your hair as you cruise the highways looking for some fun and scenic viewpoints. However, as we are sure you are well aware, road trips might be fun but they also pose a lot of danger if you aren’t careful and prepared. The last thing you want to do is end up being the inspiration for some horror thriller in a decade’s time! Here are some top tips for staying safe on a road trip.

1. Car Condition
Before you set off, make sure that all of the key parts of the car in are good working order. The last thing you want is to break down in the middle of nowhere, with no cell reception, and have to rely on the unpredictability of thumbing for help on the side of the road. If you know that your vehicle is going to be able to get you from A to B and back again, then you always have an exit route from any situation. This is definitely one of the most important tips for staying safe on a road trip.
2. Spare Tire
For the love of god, please make sure that you have a spare tire in the trunk! If you are going to be driving over a lot of dusty, country roads, then you never know what kinds of objects are going to be laying out there for you to drive over. If you have a spare in the trunk, then the problem is already solved!

3. Back up GPS
You need to have a back up for your GPS in case it decides to die on you when you are in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, pretty much any smartphone these days can act as a secondary GPS thanks to its mapping and data abilities, so as long as one of you has the battery life to handle it, you will always be able to navigate yourselves if the main GPS dies.
4. Seatbelts
Listen, they are there in the car for a reason! Even if you are the only car on a deserted road, you should always have your seatbelt on. No shade to the driver, but you never know what could happen with a pothole, or an animal running across the road. There is no reason that you shouldn’t all be belted up for your road trip experience.
5. Well Rested
You need to make sure that whoever is taking a driving shift is really well rested because even the tiniest bit of distraction or tiredness can pose a risk to the safety of everyone in the car. The trick is not to rely on just one driver for the entire road trip. Take it in turns so that everybody has the chance to nap and rest in between.
