1

Rome

Rome is one of the world’s cultural epicentres and will, no doubt, be pretty high on list of places to visit in Italy. It’s packed with art, history and, of course, tourists. If you’re keen to really get to grips with the celebrated city, you’ll need to devote a good few days (or weeks/months/years) to exploring its legendary museums, churches and galleries.

2

Venice

The floating (or sinking) city, Venice is built on a lagoon and famed for its gondolas and its wild ‘carnaval’ festivities. It’s another hotspot for arts and culture, and is stuffed full of galleries, architectural gems and museums packed with fascinating artefacts, both ancient and recent. Be warned: Venice is a major tourist attraction, and as a result is one of the most expensive cities in Italy. If you’re keen to see the sights, you’re going to have to fork out of the privilege.

3

Cinque Terra

Cinque Terra is a beautiful string of five towns dotted close together along the Italian coastline. It’s a fantastic spot to do some serious walking and you can make your way from village to village on foot by means of a cliff path. The scenery is absolutely spectacular and the towns are packed with fabulous little cafes and authentic Italian markets.

4

Sicily

Sicily is characterised by an eclectic cultural diversity. Its long history of occupation and domination has given rise to a variety in its architecture not present in other Italian cities. It’s a well-preserved, vibrant place, with plenty of fantastic restaurants and beautiful coastal scenery.

5

Capri

Capri has a bit of a reputation as a tourist paradise. Its gorgeous climate and beautiful all-round coastline attract visitors from all over the world, all year round. However, there is more to the island that sand, sea and sunbathing. Its towns are rich in roman history and its rural landscape is surprisingly untouched.

Florence

Florence is a staggeringly beautiful renaissance city. It is home to Michelangelo’s legendary David, and its historic streets are lined with myriad fantastic restaurants and bars. In addition, its wine is some of the best Italy has to offer.

7

San Gimignano

This walled town, located high on a hill in Tuscany, is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval architecture in Italy. It’s packed with vibrant outdoor cafes and boasts plenty of historical and cultural attractions. In addition, it’s the seat of Stefanie Meyer’s fictional vampire dynasty, the Volterra, and die-hard Twilight fans will be thrilled to find they can walk in Bella’s footsteps with a specially designed guided-tour through the ancient streets.

Italy literally overflows with fantastic travel opportunities. It is a country with a long and fascinating history, and its cities are packed with art and architecture that bare witness to this fact. Hopefully, my list of 7 places to visit will help you to plan a fabulous Italian holiday; do you have any suggestions of your own to add to it?
