1

Cross the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, but Slowly

One of the most recognizable symbols of Budapest, the oldest and the most beautiful city bridge invites you to enjoy astonishing view of the river and its banks. Széchenyi or the Chain Bridge was officially opened in the mid 19th century and was the very first permanent bridge that connected Pest and Buda, east and west. Take a pleasant walk from one side to another and pay attention to details, like stone-carved lions, decorations made of cast iron and feel its history and dignity. The views from the bridge are fabulous, but the night view of the bridge itself from a distant, slightly elevated place will simply leave you breathless.

2

Explore Castle Hill

Located on the western Buda side, Castle Hill is an important historical and cultural site of Budapest. Therefore, climbing the Castle Hill is must-do for every visitor. Once you get there, you can easily see all sight on foot. The Matthias Church built in Rococo style, Mary Magdalene Tower and the Vienna Gate are some of Buda Castle sights that you shouldn’t miss. However, one of the best free things to do in Budapest is sightseeing the Royal Palace. Although some of included museums charge a modest fee, entrance to the palace and the garden is complimentary. Of course, breathtaking views of the Pest are free of charge too.

3

Feel the Greatness of the Heroes' Square

The first impression that you are probably going to get while you are there is a feeling of the wide, open space. If you suddenly find yourself in a crowd, don’t worry, there are no demonstrations or revolutions going on – it is only a bunch of tourists who are admiring this imposing historical square. The dominating feature of the site is the Millennium Memorial; the iconic statue complex dedicated to heroes who gave their life for national freedom and independence.

Hike or Cycle on Margaret Island

Surrounded by large, busy city but surprisingly away from the noise and pollution, Margaret Island is a perfect escape for nature lovers. Divided from the city by the Danube River as the natural border, the island seems like an oasis in the center of the jungle. We all know, or at least we want to believe that the best things in life are free. Well, the one of the best free things to do in Budapest is taking a romantic walk with your loved one through the verdant greenery of Margaret Island. On your way you might see medieval ruins, monuments and fountains, and you will meet lots of happy and relaxed people. If you are more active type, there is a number of sport activities available, including cycling, swimming and tennis.

5

Get Inspired at the Cave Church

There are not many chapels carved in the rock, but there is one in Budapest, on Buda side, vis-à-vis the Liberty Bridge. The place is still used for services kept by the Hungarian Paulite Holy Order and is open to all curious visitors. If you find yourself there during a service, you will enjoy unforgettable acoustic experience, due to specific acoustic characteristics of the interior. That is definitely one of the best free attractions in Budapest.
