7 Wonderful Attractions of Wales to Add to Your List ...

As the land of song, rugby and mountains and valleys, the attractions of Wales are plentiful and wonderful. It might just seem to be a small country tagged on to the side of England, but trust me, it is fiercely proud and has a distinct national identity. Former coal mine villages made from the ubiquitous grey slate nestle in lush green valleys, sharing space with sheep farms, beautiful beaches pepper a gorgeously rugged coastline and the countryside just shouts, walk me, bike me, enjoy me. Check out these attractions of Wales.

Snowdonia National Park

Snowdonia National Park This is one of the quintessential attractions of Wales. It is the largest national park in the country, with 100 beautiful lakes and more than 90 mountainous peaks to enjoy, including the tallest Welsh mountain – Snowdon, which stands at 3650 feet. If you want to see some amazing views of the Welsh countryside, a visit here will not disappoint. The National Park of Snowdonia also offers brilliant outdoor activities.

2

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct This is one of the best engineering sights of Wales that you are likely to ever see, built by one of the greatest engineers Britain has ever produced – Thomas Telford. It is the most recent addition to the list of British World Heritage Sites, and offers the chance for those with a stomach for heights the option take a view from the very top over the Welsh valleys. The best way to enjoy the experience is a barge (narrow boat) trip because the aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee.

3

Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle Although you can’t go far in Wales without coming across a castle, Caernarfon Castle is really something special, and easily one of the most glorious castles in Britain. It is another World Heritage Site and a magnificent testament to the medieval age of true castle building. The interior of the castle has been transformed to give visitors information about King Edward I (the king who commissioned this and many other castles in Wales) and provides a wonderful environment for children to learn about the medieval period, as well as being the site of the Investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969.

4

National Museum Cardiff

The reason that this museum is one of the best reasons to visit Wales is simply that it has something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you are interested in local history, archaeology, art or geology, there will be something for you to see and learn. In fact, one of the reasons that it’s great for families it that you needn’t spend a penny to get in!

5

Offa’s Dyke Path

Although this magnificent path will take you around two weeks to walk in its entirety, many tourists aim to walk sections of the path in a few days. It was built back in the 8th century, following the orders of King Offa, as a defense against the English. The Dyke is an earthwork consisting of massive ditches and slopes and the current English/Welsh border still follows roughly the same line. The path runs from the north of Wales down to the south, offering 177 miles of pure Welsh beauty.

Barafundle Bay

Barafundle Bay The beaches are some of the best attractions of Wales. Although I am passionate about the beach at Tenby, having spent many a happy day in my childhood on the sands and in the pretty town, the best beach in Wales according to a poll taken of walesonline.co.uk readers is Barafundle Bay. It is a small, somewhat remote but totally stunning horseshoe shaped bay on the Pembrokeshire coast in South Wales. It is likely to stay as unspoiled as the picture shows as it is land owned by the National Trust.

7

Doctor Who Experience

Doctor Who Experience I know many AWS readers love the Time Lord, so undoubtedly one of a fan’s must-go places to visit in Wales has to be the Doctor Who Experience. Located near the sea front in Cardiff, it’s the opportunity to experience your own journey through space and time, meeting all your favorite characters from Doctor Who and Torchwood, much of which is filmed in the streets of Cardiff.

This is just a small selection of the lovely attractions of Wales. If you’re ever in the UK, do put Wales on your itinerary. It is a beautiful little country. Have you ever been?
