7 Tips on Packing to Study Abroad ...

By Kelly

Studying abroad can be an amazing experience, but packing to study abroad can be incredibly stressful. Thinking about all the things your are going to do and the people you are going to meet, you obviously want to look you best. But instead of packing your entire closet, here are some tips for packing to study abroad that will keep you looking good and won’t have you freaking out that your suitcase is above that annoying 50-pound limit.

1 Do Your Research

Depending on where and when you are studying abroad, you are going to need different things. The key to packing to study abroad is to do your research. Look up what the temperature will be like so you can pack accordingly. You may also want to know the style of the people native to that area. You don’t want to stand out as a tourist and what you may wear as an American college student may not be appropriate in that culture.

2 Bring Your Layers

This is essential to any packing list, but especially for study abroad. You will want a variety of clothing so you can layer on clothing for all types of temperatures and situations. Students who study abroad typically travel to other places on the weekends or on breaks, so make sure to pack for the surrounding areas also.

3 Pack the Basics

I always bring random extravagant clothes with me on trips, and I never end up wearing them. When packing to study abroad, stick to basics that you know you will wear. And you will be able mix and match all of your basics to create tons of outfits with limited clothing. You will have more variety of clothes, and you won't take up space in your suitcase with clothes you will never wear.

4 Accessorize

If you are worried about only wearing basics, make sure to bring tons of fun and exciting accessories. You can dress up any simple outfit with bright and bold accessories and they only take up a minimal amount of room in your suitcase. Bring tons of necklaces, bracelets, and rings, and you can even bring a variety of small bags if they don’t take up too much room.

5 Limit Your Shoes

As a self proclaimed shoe-aholic, I know how hard it can be to limit your shoes when packing. But if you are packing to study abroad, you need to really think about which shoes you will be wearing. Try to limit yourself to one pair of heels, boots, flats, and sneakers. And make sure that whatever shoes you do bring, can go with a variety of outfits.

6 Leave Room in Your Suitcase

You are going to do some major shopping while you are abroad, aren’t you? So make sure to leave room in your suitcase for all of your foreign goodies. It would be a shame to buy gifts for all of your friends and family members and then not be able to fit them in your suitcase.

7 Bring Some Clothing in Your Carry on

It is my fear that I will arrive at my destination; ready to start my study aboard adventures, only to find out that my baggage has been lost. When packing to study abroad, make sure to bring at least one or two basic outfits in your carry on bag. That way you will have at least some clothes to hold you over while you wait for your baggage to make its way back to you.
