By Kelly5 Comments

Amsterdam can sometimes get a bad rep and tourists sometimes overlook the many sights in Amsterdam. People are so fixated on legal marijuana and the Red Light District that they forget about the culture and beauty that Amsterdam has to offer. If you are thinking about taking a trip to the Netherlands, definitely check out these must-see sights in Amsterdam that you cannot miss out on.

1 I AMsterdam Sign

Few of the many sights in Amsterdam are as iconic as the I AMsterdam sign. Taking a picture in front of, or on top of, the giant letters is on almost everyone’s Amsterdam bucket list. I have never heard of anyone visiting the city and not taking a picture with the letters

Frequently asked questions

2 Anne Frank House

I can easily say that walking through the Anne Frank House was an incredibly inspiring experience. I read Anne Frank's diary when I was in school but to see firsthand where Anne Frank and her family hid from Nazis took it to an entirely new level. When you walk from room to room, you can’t help but picture what it must be like to live in these tiny spaces for years. It gives you a firsthand perspective of what life must have been like during that time.

3 Van Gogh Museum

Van Gogh is one of the most world-renowned artists of all time and his work is positively outstanding. To be surrounded by the work of Van Gogh and his contemporaries is quite fascinating. His painting method is so unique and to say that you have seen the works of one of the most famous painters in the world is not something that everyone can say.

4 Rijksmuseum

With floor upon floor of beautiful paintings, historical artifacts, and everything in between, the Rijksmuseum is a must see for any culture-loving tourist. It is one of the most popular museums in Amsterdam for its extensive collection of art from people like Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, and Frans Hals. I would recommend setting aside a good chunk of time for this sight as it is easy to get lost in the art of this museum.

5 Heineken Experience

To take a break from all of the incredible art and beautiful sights, head on over the Heineken Experience to get a behind the scenes look at one of the world most popular beers. You get to see how the beer gets made, learn about the history of Heineken, and get your very own beer tasting. As a college student, it made me appreciate what actually goes into making a nice beer, rather than the cheap drinks I am used to.

Sitting in the heart of Amsterdam, this interactive museum inhabits the original Heineken brewery where the renowned lager was first crafted. As you wander through the old brew room and fermentation tanks, the mix of nostalgia and innovation is palpable. The Heineken Experience offers a refreshing educational journey followed by an engaging tasting session. It's the perfect spot to sip on a frothy beer and even pour your own under the guidance of a skilled bartender. Whether or not you're a beer aficionado, it's sure to add some effervescence to your day!

6 Dam Square

In the heart of Amsterdam, there is the Royal Palace, War Memorial, and the Nieuwe Kerk, all situated in Dam Square. If you want to take a break from museums and culture and get some fresh air, stop by Dam Square and take in some Amsterdam history. There are usually tons of street performances to catch you eye, and there might be a festival going on if you are lucky.

7 The Canals

Amsterdam is famous for its canals. You can stroll along them, look at the exquisite boat houses, and take in everything Amsterdam has to offer from the river. If you really want to see the city in style, try taking a boat tour and see Amsterdam from a new perspective.

Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful and incredible cities I have ever visited. It offers something for everyone and is filled to the brim with culture. While you can set aside some time on your trip to visit the Red Light District and coffee shops, they shouldn't overshadow all of the sights in Amsterdam that will truly wow you. What did you think of these must-see sights in Amsterdam? Have you ever been to Amsterdam? What were your favorite sights in Amsterdam?
