7 Great Ways to Make New Friends in a New Country ...

Diana

Have you moved, and are you looking for ways to make new friends in a new country? Moving to another country can be overwhelming and you may not know where to start when it comes to meeting new people. The truth is that it doesn’t have to be difficult at all; all you have to do is get out there. These are some of the great ways to make new friends in a new country.

Do you prefer sunny or rainy weather?

1. Get to Know Your Neighbors

One of the ways to make new friends in a new country is to get to know your neighbors as soon as you move into your new home. Just knock on their door and introduce yourself. If you walk into someone in the elevator or in your street, start a chat. You may not be able to do this with every neighbor, but there are always those who welcome new neighbors with open arms.

2. Join a Club

If you have a hobby or a new hobby that you’d like to pursue in your new country, it’s time to join a club. You can find many clubs on the internet and it’s a great way to meet new people that you could possibly hang out with. A great website for joining a club or group is meetup.com, where you’ll find all types of groups: from the ones that organize happy hours to book clubs to the ones that hike together.

3. Take a Class

Another way to meet new friends when you’re moving abroad is to take a class. Maybe you’re interested in learning a new language (perhaps the language of your new country) or maybe you want to upgrade your Photoshop skills. If there’s a class mate that you get along with, you could study together or go for drinks after class.

4. Get to Know Your GreenGrocer

Getting to know the people who work in your local grocery stores is actually a lot of fun, even though you might not end up as friends. Always greet them and ask them how they have been. These people will make you feel much better on those lonely days when you struggle to plan something with one of your new friends.

5. Talk to People

If you have moved abroad (or even to a different state), you know that this is not the time to be shy. You should grab any occasion to talk to people. Of course, it depends on where you live. Maybe it’s not common to talk to people at the bus stop in your area, but if it is, go ahead and do so. You never know who you'll meet and what you have in common.

6. Get to Know Colleagues

If you have a job, you’re probably getting to know the people you work with. There will always be colleagues that you get along with, and it can be fun to go for happy hour together after work. Because it’s work, you’ll always want to find out what the protocols are with regards to meeting up outside of work. But you can start by playing it safe and pick up on what other colleagues are sharing about themselves.

7. Ask for Introductions

Maybe you’ve met someone who has a friend with the same interests as you. Ask to be introduced. After all, you have nothing to lose. Explaining that you’re new to the area and don’t know many people can go a long way, and a lot of people will be happy to get in contact with you to make you feel welcome.

The key to making new friends in a new country is to be as open as possible. Put all your prejudices aside and talk to people first. Of course, you’ll meet many people that you don’t become friends with, but it’s still fun to socialize with others, especially when you don’t know many people. Do you know of other ways to make new friends in your new city or country?
