The 1950s era has always fascinated me, so soda fountains in the US are something I search out when I travel around. It’s so much fun to go back in time for an hour or so and relive bygone eras. My grandparents were teenagers in the 1950s and are always willing to answer my questions about the time period. But there’s nothing like seeing and feeling it for myself. Check out these old time soda fountains in the US and take a step back to the time of cool cars and classic music.
1 Lyons Soda Fountain, Lyons, Colorado
This is one of the most authentic soda fountains in the US with all its décor. The place has actually been in continuous operation since 1921, but still has its 1950s soda machine. You can choose from classic fountain drinks to satisfy your craving. If you’re hungry, there is a burger and salad menu too. Don’t forget to drop some change in the original jukebox and pick your favorite tune.
2 Green’s Ole Tyme BBQ and Soda Fountain, Lillian, Alabama
They only take cash, but this soda fountain down in the Deep South sure makes up for it when it comes to the menu. You can order an old fashioned milk shake or float for a super cold, creamy treat. The place also serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner so make sure you bring your appetite.
3 Borroum’s Drug Store, Corinth, Mississippi
This place’s claim to fame is that it is the oldest soda fountain in the entire state of Mississippi. You can really go back in time and enjoy your soda at the counter. Borroum’s opened during the Civil War and many visitors say it hasn’t changed since then. That means you’ll get to see a multitude of old war relics while you enjoy your treat.
4 Springfield Drug, Springfield, Nebraska
Many soda fountains back in the day could be found inside the local drugstore. People would do their shopping and have a meal or snack at the same time. It was a great way to make some extra profit while customers waited for their medications. Nowadays, you can still go on in and enjoy the old timey feel the place has. With a vintage soda fountain in the shop, you know you’re getting the real deal here.
5 Dr. Jazz Soda Fountain and Grille, Lebanon, Illinois
Not only does the interior of this place take you back, but they also host an old fashioned car show that will really leave you feeling nostalgic for days gone by. There are lots of tasty food offerings on the menu, but the soda fountain is where you’ll want to be. Old fashioned counter service makes the treat feel all the more authentic.
6 Jimmy’s Old Fashioned Soda Fountain, Duncannon, Pennsylvania
True to its name, the old fashioned shakes, malts and floats are prepared using vintage equipment from the days of old. This is the place to be on the weekends when you can enjoy your treat and listen to old timey music on the jukebox. Some of the equipment here has been used in Hollywood movies and they usually have old television episodes running for your enjoyment.
7 Beth Marie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Denton, Texas
Walk back to the '50s when you go through the door of Beth Marie’s. The black and white checkerboard floor, the marble counter and the old time tables and chairs all combine to create just the feel of past generations. Order fountain sodas, phosphates, floats, malts and shakes here.
