1. Sit in the Back

For some reason, this is the least desirable place to sit for many people. Sure, you'll have to wait a bit longer to get off the plane, but if you're willing to move back on a flight that isn't completely full, you might find yourself all alone in the row.

2. Stay Ready

You're going to have to be ready to move once all the passengers have taken their seats. Keep your eyes open for rows that are empty and as soon as the door is closed, high tail it over there and settle in.

3. Book an off Peak Ticket

Booking a red eye flight is one of the best ways to get an airplane row to yourself because they aren't as full. If having an empty row is more important than flying during the day, you could save some money and not be jostled by fellow passengers.

4. Sit in the Middle

This only works on flights where seats aren't assigned, but it could serve you well. Most people will sit down next to you if there is a seat between you, but are less likely to do so if you're smack in the middle of two empty seats. Of course, if the flight is full, you're going to have to give up your dream of an empty row, but if not, this might be a deterrent to other passengers.

5. Choose Less Desirable Seats

Much like sitting near the back can get you a row to yourself, so too can sitting in the seats no one else wants. This means not taking an exit row or bulkhead seat. If you are in a section that isn't so attractive, you might just find yourself with room to spread out.

6. Board Last

Not only will this save you from all that time trying to stay occupied while everyone else boards, but it can also help you on your quest for an empty row. If seats aren't assigned, this lets you have the pick of what's open, including an entire row.

7. Ask for an Upgrade

You might be surprised that sometimes it's really easy to get an upgrade simply by asking. You can often find out which row might be empty and ask to sit there instead of the seat you've been assigned. And you never know - if you're really polite about it, you could even get an upgrade to business or first class if it's available.
