1. Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show
Even if you're not into country, this song is a must-have for any road trip. If you're from the south, you probably know this song by heart, but for all those folks from the north, you might not know it yet. Well don’t worry, after one or two listens, you will be singing along with the rest of us. And you will feel super cool if you pass a sign for one of the places they mention in the song.
2. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
Every good road trip mix has at least one girlie pop song you regrettably know every word to, and «Call Me Maybe» is the epitome of that song. From its first beats, you know you will be dancing along to this hit. And its infectious lyrics are guaranteed to be stuck in your heard for the rest of your trip.
Frequently asked questions
3. Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
Time for the classic and mandatory Journey song each playlist requires. No surprise that I picked the most epic Journey song of them all. Admit it, you know every word to this song, and you are not ashamed to belt them all out. So go ahead and sing your heart out. Extra brownie points if you also listen to the Glee version.
4. Born to Be Wild – Steppenwolf
When I think of «Born to Be Wild» I think of badass bikers driving across the country going wherever the wind takes them. While you’re most likely not in a motorcycle gang, you can still appreciate the awesomeness of this song. So go «get your motor running» and «head out on the highway» with the most classic road trip song ever.
5. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
I dare you to NOT sing along with this song. I personally believe it can’t be done. Not only that, also try to not sing along to the guitar solo. Again, I don’t think it can be done. This song is just too epic! I hope you’re ready to bust our your best Freddy Mercury impression.
6. Great Day to Be Alive – Travis Tritt
You may not be familiar with this song, but after just one listen you will be obsessed… I promise. It is the ultimate feel good song! It makes you appreciate all the small things you pass on your road trip. And it will absolutely leave you knowing that «it’s a great day to be alive» and the «sun's still shining when you close your eyes» (but don’t actually close your eyes… you’re driving silly)...
7. Wannabe – Spice Girls
What is any good playlist without a classic 90’s pop song you can shamelessly sing along to? Well thankfully we have «Wannabe» by the Spice Girls. Regardless of if you know what a «zigazig ah» is (I don’t think anyone really does), this song is guaranteed to make you dance in your seat and leave you in a good mood all day.
8. Fade into Darkness - Avicii
Techno isn’t the genre for everyone, but for those girls out there who appreciate a nice EDM song once in a while, «Fade into Darkness» is a great song for a road trip. It has awesome lyrics, an awesome beat, and an even more awesome drop. And even if you're not the biggest techno fan, it has a huge pop influence so you don’t feel too out of place listening to it. Try to keep your car on the road while fist pumping with one hand.
9. Life is a Highway – Rascal Flatts
Here’s another small dose of country for your road trip. But the great thing about Rascal Flatts is that they are the perfect mix of country and pop. So if country isn’t necessary your thing, you don’t have to be hesitant to put this song on your playlist. And the fact that it was on the «Cars» soundtrack doesn’t hurt its chances of being an awesome road trip song.
10. Drive – Train
I had to put this song on the list simply because of its title. You have to have at least one song on a road trip whose entire purpose is telling you to drive. It has such upbeat rhythm and lead singer Pat Monahan’s unique voice make this a super feel good song. Warning: strong desire to dance may result in you not paying attention to the road. You’ve been warned.
What are your favorite road trip songs? Do you think these songs are good for a road trip? Do you have any memorable road trip stories?
