1

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is a really great idea when you’re traveling with your partner. You’re not only worried about what you need, you also should be mindful of another person. Yes, your beau is a full-grown adult (hopefully). But it’s nice to know that someone has your back if you forget something or need some help during the trip. Does your partner have sensitive ears? Bring along a pack of gum for the flight to help relieve the pressure. Is he or she prone to forgetting things? Pack an extra toothbrush, just in case. The point here is to be prepared. Have an idea of things you may be doing during your trip so you can pack accordingly. You don’t want to be scheduled for a hiking trip having packed nothing but heels! Also check the weather to make sure you both bring the proper items to stay comfortable during your trip.

2

Build an Itinerary

One of the best ways to plan ahead for a trip is to build an itinerary. It doesn’t have to be to the letter, just a rough plan of what’s ahead during the trip. This helps with packing as well. Creating an itinerary or schedule is also a good way to make sure both of you know the top priorities of things to do and see while on your trip. What sites do you want to see? Is there a specific time of day you need to be at any given place? Which uncle should you visit first? These are all things that could be ironed out before the trip to save hassle and confusion later.

3

Compromise on Must-sees

You and your partner don’t always think alike. Isn’t that one of the reasons why you love them so much? Knowing this, it’s possible they will want to see places and/or people that you’re not necessarily excited about. For example, a trip to New York City may sound like all jazz clubs and shopping for you, but there’s a good chance your beau may want to see a museum or catch a Yankees game. Or vice versa! Talk about the top things that each of you want to see so that you can plan accordingly, then make compromises if it doesn’t seem like everything will fit.

4

Allow Wiggle Room

Even with all of this advance scheduling, we all know things don’t always go according to plan. Weather, flight delays…there are countless things that may prevent you from doing everything on your list. Add wiggle room into your schedule to account for things that are out of your control. That way you won’t be super upset if your train is late or you’d like to stay at a relative’s house a little longer than you originally planned.

5

Remain Calm

All of the previous steps are meant to alleviate the stresses of travel, but still: things go wrong! Perhaps you lose your luggage. Maybe you’ll leave your bank card at a bar in another city during your trip. These things happen! There’s no reason to let mishaps ruin your trip. Try to make the most of it when things don’t quite go according to plan. Remember that you’re with someone you adore, and time spent together seeing new places and learning about each other is most important. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Be Understanding

Are you traveling to a place that’s familiar to you but new to your partner? Be understanding! This is a new place for them, and there will be a number of things they’re not used to. It could be anything: the weather, the modes of transportation, the fact that your uncle calls everyone ‘Bucko’ – anything. Keep this in mind as you bounce from place to place. Do all you can to make your partner feel calm and comfortable in a place you know well.

7

Have Fun

Isn’t this the point? You love hanging out with this person, so traveling together should be no different. The whole idea is to have a good time while getting to know each other better. Always remember that – no matter what happens – this is an enjoyable time! Have fun and place much deserved value in the quality time you’re able to spend with your partner in a new/different and exciting place.

Traveling together is an excellent way to get to know your partner on a deeper level. Especially during the holidays, things can become stressful during travel. How the two of you handle traveling excitement and mishaps together will show you a lot about each other and the future you may have. Do you have any tips for traveling with a partner? Share!
