BHANGARH, INDIA

The fort is believed to be haunted, so much so that archaeologists are legally forbidden to access the site after sunset and the locals have moved home outside its limits. Established in 1573, Bhangarh was built during the rule of Bhagwant Das to serve as residence for his younger son, but was completely abandoned two centuries later because of an alleged curse and dark tales surrounding the town. Despite the scary legends, the abandoned fort is absolutely gorgeous, with spectacular buildings, impressive temples and picturesque scenery.
