8 Venues for the London Olympic Games of 2012 ...

The London Olympics venues are soon to be heaving with fans of sport and fans of theatre. It doesn’t matter whether you love sport or not, when the Olympics are in your own country, you really, really just must go. It’s probably a once in a lifetime chance. Of course, if you’re in the UK, the London Olympic venues are easy to visit any time but why go when they are devoid of the roar of the crowd. As with most Olympiads, no major city has every venue right on hand and this is so with the London Olympics venues. Thankfully the UK is fairly small so they aren’t that far apart. Here’s 8 Venues for the London Olympic Games 2012:

The Olympic Stadium

The 80,000 seater Olympic Stadium is the centerpiece of Olympic Park. The 2012 Games have been determined to be the ‘Green Olympics’ and have the ethos of sustainability, and this is very much a feature of all the new London Olympics venues. 55,000 seats can be removed from the stadium after the games making it a useable community venue after the athletes and fans have all gone home. The stadium sits on an island and visitors enter across 5 bridges. The opening and closing ceremony as well as all the athletics will take place here.

2

Weymouth and Portland

One of the London Olympics venues outside of the city is the location for the sailing competitions. Weymouth is a south coast holiday resort which also has a long heritage in sailing. The existing sailing academy has benefited from some upgrades and the town now has a new marina which will continue to attract visitors after the games.

3

Wimbledon

One of the London Olympics venues that is already world famous, is the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Located in Wimbledon the south west of the city, naturally, the tennis event will be held here. The world’s greatest tennis players will be gracing the courts in June for the Wimbledon open and then again for the Games in August. Let’s hope the weather’s fine, otherwise that roof is going to be opening and closing, a lot!

4

The Velodrome

One of the sports that GB expects a haul of medals from is cycling. It is one of the few sports where there is a wealth of truly world class talent with both male and female cyclist from Britain regularly taking podium places in major championships. Spearheaded by Sir Chris Hoy (we knight our very successful sportsmen/women!), the GB cyclists will be racing around the magnificent new Velodrome. One of the iconic venues for the London Olympics on Olympic Park, the wood for the track and exterior cladding has been sourced from sustainable forestry stocks.

5

Hyde Park

The largest of London’s Royal Parks has seen an awful lot in its lifetime – it actually opened in 1637. From Royal hunting parties, elegant ladies in carriages, dandies on horseback, political rallies and lately, massive rock concerts, the park plays host to the triathlon and open water swimming events. Neither of these events is unusual for Hyde Park. The Serpentine Lake has been used by swimmers for a few hundred years and the park has hosted world triathlon championships in previous years.

To give oneself earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.

6

Wembley Stadium

Wembley has been the talisman sporting venue in Britain since it opened in 1923. It was demolished and rebuilt, reopening in 2007. Wembley is the second largest of the venues for the London Olympics after the Olympic Stadium. The roof of the stadium is the single largest roof span in the world, measuring 315 meters across. Naturally, as the home of the England soccer team, Wembley will host the final stages of the football competition. Group and knockout stages will be held in various stadia around the UK.

7

Horse Guards Parade

In June (16th), Horse Guards Parade in front of St. James’s Palace will see the annual Trooping the Colour – an event that celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s birthday. This year it has greater significance, as it is also her Diamond Jubilee year. Then, in August, the parade ground will be cleared of horses, tons more sand will be shipped in and the Olympics beach volleyball competition can begin. From soldiers and horses and royals bedecked in full regalia to the skimpiest outfits of the volleyball players – will Horse Guards, one of the UK’s most reverential institutions ever recover from the shock?

8

London’s Roads and Streets

Surely the most fantastic of the London Olympic venues is the city itself. The entire city is being spruced up ready to play host but the city streets will also be home to various events during the games. The Marathon course is already one of the most recognizable in the world and this year, the route will also be used for the road cycle events. All those famous landmarks will be on show to the world once more.

The London Olympics venues are quite something and the fact they are in a magnificent city adds an extra frisson. Let’s hope the 2012 Olympic Games live up to their billing.
