So many places, so little time. When you look at things in the cold light of day, if you take one vacation every year, you can reasonably assume you can visit maybe 40-50 countries other than your own. As an avid traveler, that’s too sad for me to compute. I don’t want to know that. Knowing that makes it even harder to decide where my next destination should be. So where should you choose?
1. Marvel at the Taj Mahal in Agra, India
Is there a more iconic symbol of love in the entire world? The Taj Mahal is an extraordinary building that was commissioned by Shah Jahan, a Mughal emperor, in memory of his wife.
2. View the Northern Lights in Iceland
You can head to Iceland to catch a glimpse of the amazing Northern Lights. It’s one thing seeing them on the TV, but witnessing the phenomenon in person can be completely life changing.
3. Stare in Awe at the Grand Canyon in the USA
Sure, it’s only a big hole in the earth, but the Grand Canyon holds so much natural wonder, it is truly one of the most dramatic locations in the world. Don’t go getting any Thelma and Louise related ideas, though!
4. Walk along the Great Wall of China
Stretching over 13000 miles, it’s pretty unlikely that you are going to be able to walk the entire thing, but just sampling a small stretch of the architectural marvel can be a really rewarding experience.
5. Take a Boat Trip on the Mekong River in Vietnam
The Mekong Delta is a location that makes you feel like you have walked straight in to ancient Vietnam. Bursting with personality and history, you can travel around by boat and catch a glimpse of simple Vietnamese life at its most untouched.
6. Go on a Safari in Botswana
A safari in any wildlife rich area can be a life-changing experience, but Botswana has long been regarded as one of the absolute best countries to choose for your experience. From lions to zebra to leopards, all of your nature documentary dreams will come true.
7. Dance the Tango in Buenos Aires in Argentina
After all, what good is a tango if you are performing it in the country of its origin? If you are inspired by the degree of talent of Dancing with The Stars, then you won’t believe the skills of some of Argentina’s very best dancers!
8. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
This is not a suggestion for the faint hearted, but if you are an extreme traveler and want to test your limits, then there is not more extreme way to do that then to attempt to climb the high peak in Africa. It’s a true once in a lifetime experience.
9. Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia
There is no train journey more epic than the amazing journey on the Trans-Siberian Express. Starting in Moscow and ending up in Mongolia, the mixture of weather, culture and changing history that you witness really is one of a kind.
10. Attend a Culinary School in Mexico
Anybody who thinks that they can make good Mexican food is wrong until they have seen the real deal at a tourist’s culinary school across the border! If Mexican food is your passion, sample the real thing and learn how to make it.
11. Go Wildlife Watching in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador
600 miles from any mainland, the Galapagos Islands offer the chance to experience some of the most untouched wildlife left in the world. Tortoises, seals, penguins … it’s the dream destination for any David Attenborough fan!
12. Eat Sushi in Tokyo in Japan
If you are a lover of sushi, then you absolutely have to give your taste buds a treat by sampling the real deal in the many incredible restaurants in Tokyo. After trying it, that sushi place around the corner just won’t be able to cut it anymore! After eating, hit the shops.
13. Walk in the Tree Tops of the Cloud Forest in Costa Rica
The Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica is a truly magical place. It’s home to an incredible array of birds and animal species of birds and boasts the very rare atmosphere that only a cloud forest can have. Very eerie and unique.
14. Do Yoga in Bali in Indonesia
The life of any yoga enthusiast would surely be made complete by performing the exercise that they love in the country that reveres it so deeply. You can pretend you are in your very own version of Eat, Pray Love.
15. Stare at Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil
The giant statue in Brazil is probably one of the most iconic man-made structures in the entire world, and although you may have seen it lots of times on the TV, nothing can beat the awe that you feel when you are dwarfed by its size in person. After you’re done looking, catch some rays on the legendary Rio beaches.
16. Swim with Dolphins in Mauritius
Swimming with dolphins is often described as the best moment of a person’s life, so instead of hopping down to the local aquarium, why not combine it with the holiday of a lifetime by travelling to Mauritius to complete the experience.
17. Scuba Dive at Great Barrier Reef in Australia
Before it becomes irrevocably damaged by climate and environmental change, you absolutely must visit the Great Barrier Reef and scuba dive to explore the natural wonders that live within it.
18. Undertake a Himalayan Trek in Nepal
Those of you who really want to feel at one with nature would absolutely love a trek through the Himalayas. An Everest Base Camp trek will take you through the wonderful city of Kathmandu, which is home to a stunning UNESCO Buddhist temple.
19. Hike up to Machu Picchu in Peru
No travel bucket list is complete without mention of Machu Picchu! This 15th century city that was constructed by the Incas gives an incredible insight in to the ways of the past, and makes you feel completely insignificant in the light of ancient history!
20. Lie in the Sun at Paradise Beach in St. Kitts and Nevis
The aptly named Paradise Beach located on St Kitts and Nevis is one of the most heavenly beaches you will ever have the fortune to visit. And don’t miss out on a glass or two of the local rum punch!
21. Take a Dip in the Spa in Budapest in Hungary
The spas in the Hungarian capital are simply stunning in their tiled décor. After enjoying the waters, explore the city. The monuments and architecture are more than worthy of attention.
22. Commune with Mother Nature in Tekapo, New Zealand
If natural beauty is something that you crave, then Tekapo in New Zealand with thrill and delight you with its spectacular lakes and an Earth and Sky Observatory that has been described as the window to the universe. One of the ultimate stargazing destinations.
23. Walk up the Acropolis in Athens in Greece
The Ancient Greeks had a profound impact on civilization, so much of which is still evidential today. Scaling the Acropolis to visit the Parthenon is a must for anyone with an interest in the Classics.
24. Visit the Temples in Bagan in Burma
Unbelievably, Burma is home to more than 10,000 temples, all of which are immaculately designed and beautiful to see. Some of them even date back to the 9th century, which is so long ago that I can barely even comprehend it!
25. See the View from the Shard in London
The 4th tallest building in Europe offers magnificent views of one of the greatest cities in the world. After experiencing the panorama, descend and see the multitudinous sights and attractions of London.
26. Ride a Camel to the Pyramids in Egypt
An amazing experience only made better by the mode of transport for getting there. Choose camels over tourist buses and enjoy the ride of a lifetime to see sights of a lifetime.
27. Drink Champagne in Reims in France
Where better to quaff a bottle of bubbly than in the place it is made. Reims is a lovely base for a tour of this historic wine -making region of France – Champagne.
28. Take the Cable Car up Table Mountain in South Africa
You can walk up to the summit if you’re up for the hike but the cable car is a great way to get there. The views are breathtaking – not only of Cape Town, but the ocean and Robben Island (Mandela’s prison home).
29. See the Rice Terraces in the Philippines
The incredible Banaue Rice Terraces are known as the National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines. The stepped terraces have been carved into the mountainside and can be visited year round. Look out for the natural watering holes and waterfalls.
30. Say Something at the Whispering Wall in Bologna
Bologna is one of Italy’s under-rated destinations. As well as being home to the oldest university in the world, it is an incredible city for food. The medieval architecture is a delight and you really have to visit the whispering wall.
