7 Superb Beaches of South Africa That Dreams Are Made of ...

South Africa is a bountiful and beauteous country, so it’s no surprise that the beaches of South Africa are a superb collection. From gracing tiny towns on the Garden Route, to providing escapes from the huge metropolitan centers like Cape Town and Durban, the beaches of South Africa are gentle places where the waves roll in gently perfect for a day’s bathing or wild Atlantic surf washed havens where seals and penguins find a happy home. Here’s some of my favorite South African beaches.

Boulders Beach, Simonstown

Boulders Beach, Simonstown Famous as one of the premier beaches in South Africa, Boulders Beach is a truly unique delight. Home to a thriving African Penguin colony who are quite happy to mingle with beach goers and frolic in the water beside you, there are lots of lovely rock pools and granite boulders to explore. The beach is heavily regulated by the Parks Board to keep numbers down and to preserve the pristine beach and keep the penguin colony safe.

2

Camps Bay Beach, Camps Bay

Camps Bay Beach, Camps Bay One of the wealthiest suburbs in the Western Cape is perched along the famous Camps Bay strip. Here, looking over the breeze ruffled bay on the Atlantic Ocean, you can mingle with the rich and famous in the best Cape Town eateries and swanky wine bars. Packed to capacity in the summer time, it is the place to be seen while bronzing your perfect body and then schmoozing over the road to cocktails as the spectacular sunset ends another perfect day in Camps Bay.

3

Clifton Beach, Atlantic Seaboard

Clifton Beach, Atlantic Seaboard One of the most coveted beaches in South Africa has to be Clifton Beach along the coastline known as the Atlantic Seaboard. Here luxury beach bungalows jut out from the peninsula and overlook this very swanky, exclusive beach front. With the most sought after property in all of South Africa here, the location is hot; just like the bodies that grace the beaches here. It is not uncommon for luxury yachts to throw anchor just offshore and people to swim to the beach before heading back to cocktails on deck.

4

Margate Beach, Kwazulu Natal

Margate Beach, Kwazulu Natal Margate is a popular holiday resort town along the eastern coast of South Africa, just 20 minutes or so from Port Shepstone. The main beach is very popular among sun worshippers, surfers, paddlers and families who frequent the Blue Flag rated sands and water for some snorkeling, swimming and some fun in the sun. And once the sun sets along the magnificent horizon, the party heats up just like the day time temperatures. Very popular among locals and visitors alike – this is the place to be in KZN.

5

Dolphin Beach, Jeffery’s Bay

Dolphin Beach, Jeffery’s Bay Jeffery’s Bay or J-Bay as it is referred to by the locals, is possibly the hottest surfing spot in all of South Africa. But the main beach – Dolphin Beach is a bit further on from the super tubes packed with surfers, and has acquired Blue Flag status – beaches that are certified Blue Flag beaches in South Africa are because of the water safety, water quality, education and environmental standards. This is a stunning family beach; great for a day out in the water, building sandcastles and soaking up the sun.

Noetzie Beach, Knysna

Noetzie Beach, Knysna Knysna along the famous Garden Route, is home to some to some of the most incredible South African beaches. And this list would not be complete without a mention of Noetzie Beach. What was originally known as Knysna’s secret beach has become much more well known and is no longer the best kept secret held close by the locals. What was once a camping spot among holiday makers who used to come down to the seaside by ox wagon as far back as the 1800s is now more known for the arrival of the Pezula Castle. During the apartheid era, it was one of the only public places that welcomed everyone. There are still no roads to the beach, but a short walk will take you there.

Grotto Beach, Hermanus

Grotto Beach, Hermanus Definitely one of the most striking beaches in South Africa, Grotto Beach is very popular among city dwellers who flock to the coast for a summer time getaway. Hermanus is famous for its spectacular beaches and whale watching and has become a world class tourist destination. It is popular among swimmers, sand castle builders, sun bathers and families who come to spend time together. There is a quaint café where sunbathers can buy ice cream, cool drinks and burgers, and there is even a restaurant overlooking the beach - perfect for a sun downer.

Do you have a favorite among these beaches of South Africa, or do you have another special choice?
