7 Simply Sublime Beaches in Puerto Rico ...

I think we can all agree that there are some fabulous beaches in the Caribbean and among them are the beaches of Puerto Rico. The great thing about Puerto Rico for you lucky American readers is that as an unincorporated US territory, you can visit this gorgeous island (well actually, a small group of islands) without a passport and use your US dollars. So if you’re thinking of a sun, sea, and sand vacation, why not check out these beaches of Puerto Rico?

Green Beach, Vieques

Green Beach, Vieques Many of the beaches of Puerto Rico are known for excellent snorkeling, but Green Beach on the Island of Vieques is a real standout! Here the reef is healthy and the undersea life is abundant. The waters are clear and calm and you don’t have to swim far to see spectacular aquatic displays. Vieques is 7 miles to the east from the main Puerto Rican island. Get there by plane in 30 minutes or less, or take a leisurely 1 hour and 30 minute ferry ride.

2

Playa De Ponce

Playa De Ponce Smooth, calm water for swimming at a Puerto Rican beach that’s not too sleepy defines Playa de Ponce on the Southwestern shore of the main island. The beach is just two miles outside of Ponce, the Island’s second largest city. You can get away from the crowds without experiencing your own version of “Lost.”

3

Punta Higuero

Punta Higuero One of the best surfing beach destinations in Puerto Rico awaits you at Punta Higuero – many consider it the best. The swells are consistent year round and waves break both left and right. This spot is located on Puerto Rico’s Western coast about 8 miles southwest of Aguadilla. It is an easy beach to surf, but it can get crowded. Check the surf report before you go.

4

Playa Escondida

Playa Escondida To really get away from it all, take a 25 minute (2 mile) trek through a mangrove forest to this hidden gem. Start the walk at Seven Seas Beach near Fajardo on the Northeastern tip of the main Island. Do not plan to go in the water here! Currents are dangerous and swimming is actually forbidden. The appeal of this spot is going somewhere super secluded (the name actually means Hidden Beach) and off the beaten path.

5

Balneario De Boqueron, Cabo Rojo

Balneario De Boqueron, Cabo Rojo Experience the flagship of beaches in Puerto Rico at this well-appointed, pristine beach on the Southwestern shore. Located in the town of Cabo Rojo, this beach used to be a pirate hideout. Now is has been designated a Blue Flag beach, meaning it is among the world’s best and meets strict criteria for water quality, safety and services, environmental education and information and environmental management. It is set apart from most Puerto Rican beaches by having lots of amenities, including lifeguards, a cafeteria, handicap facilities, restrooms and a playground. It is particularly good for families. Although it can get crowded, the quality and convenience are worth it!

Famous Quotes

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

Pinones Beach, Carolina

Pinones Beach, Carolina Just 2 miles outside of the capital of San Juan is another Blue Flag beach – Pinones, Carolina. Stay in the oldest city on U.S. territory and take a short taxi or car ride to this beautiful, lively locale. Enjoy kayaking around the lagoon or ride a bike up and down the boardwalk. This area is known for its food. Enjoy a wide variety of Puerto Rican snacks (pinchos) from street vendors, or relax at one of the numerous bars or open-air restaurants.

7

Luquillo Beach

Luquillo Beach For a family friendly outing on the Northeastern shore, Luquillo Beach can’t be beat! Facilities include changing rooms and showers, and you can even get a camping permit. Luquillo is about 30 miles east of San Juan and is known for being very clean with exceptionally calm and clear water. There are plentiful choices for cheap eats, and not far away there is the Beach without Boundaries – it allows wheelchair access right at the edge of the water, instead of a long hard push through the sand.

This really is just a small selection of the lovely beaches of Puerto Rico and you can see, they cater for all tastes. I’d love to go visit. How about you?
