1. Mary's Milk Bar, the Grassmarket

Enjoy some gelato at this delightfully retro ice cream parlour on the historic Grassmarket. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time with the retro 50's decor and vintage ice cream sundae glasses. Sharing a few scoops of ice cream here is definitely one of the most romantic things to do in Edinburgh. Just make sure you try the rose and dark chocolate ice cream!
2. Walk the Royal Mile

Where else can you see bagpipers alongside ukulele players, cosy Scottish tea rooms, historic winding alleys and 15th century buildings? The Royal Mile is filled with character but gets particularly busy during festival season in August.
3. Dine or Stay at the Witchery

The Witchery at The Castle is one of Edinburgh's most iconic hotels, and a stay here isn't cheap! No wonder when you see the elaborate four poster beds and Victorian roll-top baths that await. Of course, you could always just enjoy a romantic dinner at the restaurant, but even that will cost you!
4. Explore Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh castle is the city's top tourist attraction but watch out for the cannons which are set off at 1pm every day! Strolling hand in hand around the castle walls is not only romantic, it provides you with stunning views over the city and some great photo opportunities
5. Climb Scott Monument

This Victorian Gothic monument on the city's Princes Street was built in honour of the writer Sir Walter Scott. It's quite a climb to the top but if you can manage the 287 steps, you'll be rewarded not only with a certificate marking your achievement, but also with some amazing vistas of the Edinburgh skyline. Climb as dusk falls if you're looking for the perfect romantic atmosphere.
6. Take a Ghost Tour

Nothing rekindles romance faster than clutching each other in the dank, dark depths of the Covenanter's Prison in Greyfriar's Churchyard. The area is closed to the public and has its own active poltergeist, so you'll need to book a tour - the City of The Dead Haunted Graveyard Tour is the one I would recommend, although its not for the faint of heart!
7. Visit the City's First Vietnamese Restaurant

If you haven't tried Vietnamese food before, you're in for a treat at the Vietnam House Restaurant in the city's Grove Street. It's a family-run establishment with stunning artwork by Vietnamese artists adorning the walls - the restaurant has its own gallery near Haymarket Station if you're inspired to see more. Expect a warm, friendly welcome and some of the best Vietnamese food around. The chicken curry, spring rolls and beef stew are all worth am extra special mention. It's the perfect place to share a romantic meal.
8. See an Arthouse Film

Edinburgh is home to the Cameo cinema and the Filmhouse on Lothian Road, and both show eclectic and unusual films year round, with special genre festivals held regularly. You might be lucky enough to catch one, but if not there are always plenty of movies showing giving you an excuse to cozy up in the quaint surroundings to enjoy some alone time.
9. Sample the Local Whisky

There are plenty of bars where you can experience whisky tasting, as well as specialist shops on the Royal Mile which will allow you to try before you buy. For the most authentic experience, head for one of the haggis and whisky establishments on the Royal Mile, where you can sample some haggis at the same time!
10. Climb Arthur's Seat

If you're looking for active pursuits, where could be better to head than Arthur's Seat? This hill might be quite steep to climb but its a popular spot for walkers and hikers. On a quiet day there's plenty of seclusion at the summit where you can enjoy a picnic or simply soak up the views over the Edinburgh skyline.
11. Live like a Leither

The Shore is a great place to visit if you're looking to romance the one you love. Stroll alongside the waterfront, dine in a floating restaurant or enjoy a glass of wine as you sit by the waters edge. In the winter months, Mimi's Bakehouse serves tempting Scottish specialities, gorgeous coffee and pretty pastries that are a great way to treat someone special!
Edinburgh is a city of contrasts, of old and new living side by side. Around every corner you'll find history and there is so much to see and do. It's the perfect spot for a romantic weekend for two or a longer break, but I recommend bringing lots of cozy clothes for the autumn and winter months!
