# 35 Quaint and Lovely Covered Bridges around the USA ...

Although other countries have some covered bridges, nowhere else are they a real feature of the rural landscape like in the USA. Covered bridges in other countries are made of stone, brick, bamboo and tropical grasses, but in the US, the material of choice is wood. That's what makes them so appealing and so fitting in their lovely settings over rivers, ponds, streams and creeks.

Such a pretty setting. Because by definition covered bridges are over water, it's rare to find one that couldn't be described as scenic.

Now pedestrian only, Sachs Bridge was useful during the Civil War. Union Army soldiers crossed it to the field hospital set up at Black Horse Tavern and the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee retreated across Sach's bridge after a Union victory in the Battle of Gettysburg.

## 8. A. M. Foster Covered Bridge, Cabot, Vermont

Sitting in beautiful rural farmland, the A. M. Foster bridge was built in 1988 by resident Richard Spaulding to replicate the 19th-century Orton Bridge.

Stark Bridge has fallen foul to the flow of the Ammonoosuc River a few times but it is always restored and still stands tall.

Standing in Shenandoah County and built in 1857, Virginia’s oldest still-standing covered bridge has become a popular photo-op for tourists and wedding parties alike.

## 11. Artist’s Bridge, Newry, Maine

Before fire, flood, and ice took their toll, the state counted 120 of these historic structures; only nine still stand. This one is no longer open to traffic but it makes a great photo.

Built in 1886, the Flume Bridge sits over the Pemigewasset River in a gorge with walls of granite rising up to 90 feet high.

Cox Ford Covered Bridge was built to replace a steel bridge lost to floods in 1913. The arches used to construct the bridge were from the Armiesburg Covered Bridge, built 60 years earlier and also washed away during the 1913 flood.

The bridge's original timber floor was replaced with steel in 1981-2. It stands over the Swift River.

Destroyed and rebuilt in 1972 after a fire. It is of a very uncommon layout, having a sidewalk as part of the original design. It is also a rare example of where a wooden bridge was built (in 1969) to replace a steel one.

Everett Covered Bridge, which crosses Furnace Run, is the only remaining covered bridge in Summit County. In the 19th century, it was one of over 2,000 in Ohio, the state that led the nation in covered-bridge construction.

Built to provide access to the S.S. Hern Mill, it is one of two remaining covered bridges in Greenbrier County, the other being Hokes Mill.

Did you know, there are more than 100 covered bridges in Vermont? The West Arlington Bridge is one of Vermont's most photographed and painted covered bridges. Dating to 1852, it is located on the town green near the former home of painter Norman Rockwell. The bridge spans the Battenkill River, a popular spot for kayaking and fly fishing.

Originally built in 1845, the bridge was destroyed by fire in 1993 and subsequently reconstructed. It stands over the Sugar River.

One of Rhode Island's only two covered bridges, the other is located on Ponaganset High School's Cross Country Course in North Scituate. Built in 1994 Swamp Meadow Bridge is a reproduction of an early-19th-century construction.
