8 Must-do Things in Milan ...

As one of the hottest destinations in Northern Italy, there are plenty of things to do in Milan. It is a beautiful city and also known for being one of the world’s great fashion centers. As well as the amazing shopping, it has plenty of historical landmarks, lovely modern buildings, super green spaces and tons of entertainment. Visitors love the mix of ancient and modern and can find pleasure her in high-tech or an espresso in a tiny café. Here’s my pick of the best things to do in Milan.

1

Visit the Duomo

Even people without a great interest in architecture cannot fail to be impressed by Milan’s cathedral. It is one of the largest gothic Cathedrals in the world and viewing both the outstanding interior and exterior is one of the definitive things to do in Milan. The cathedral building stretches for 520+ feet in length and 320+ in width, and the tallest spire is more than 300 feet high. The façade is covered by lush gothic ornamentation and statuary and the roof is a forest of spires. At nighttime, the lighting makes it one of the most romantic places to visit in Milan.

2

Attend an Opera at La Scala

Anchoring the picturesque Piazza della Scala, Milan’s opera house is world famous. Since the end of the 18th century, La Scala has hosted the greatest operas, singers and composers and is one of the most important historical and cultural attractions of Milan. Where better to see an opera than in its spiritual home? If you can’t make it to a performance, the museum next door has a fascinating exhibition.

3

Visit Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzeco)

Located right in the heart of the city, Sforza Castle is one of the sights of Milan not to be missed. It is awesome and dramatic and was built in the 14th century, although it has been modified and added to throughout the ages. Visitors can enjoy the architectural aspects of the huge round towers, a rounded clock and the defensive walls, stroll the manicured grounds, or head into the Museum of Ancient Art – one of the city’s most impressive museums.

4

Watch Football at San Siro

The rivalry between the two soccer clubs of Milan is legendary. Even non-footie fans cannot deny the strength of the atmosphere when both sets of supporters come together as their teams battle for bragging rights at the San Siro Stadium. Quite amazingly, both Milan teams (Internazionale (Inter) and AC Milan) share the 80,000 capacity stadium. I think it’s pretty ugly from the outside, but it more than makes up for it inside.

5

Shop in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

You can spend plenty of hours wandering the stores in the streets of the fashionable retail district of Quadrilatero d’Oro where the fashion is designer and pricey, but if you want to shop in one of the really special places in Milan, it’s off to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II you go. This stunning glass domed arcade with walls that are elaborately painted is full of luxury stores, charming boutiques and elegant restaurants. But you literally will find everything from Moschino to McDonalds here. If you can't afford to shop, just enjoy the building.

Take a Break in Piazza Mercanti

There is no shortage of piazzas and squares in Milan. The huge Piazza Duca d’Aosta in front of the main railway station, the Piazza Dumo and the Piazza della Scala all offer a great place to stop, but if you want to soak up some real antique flavour of Milan, it’s Piazza Mercanti you want. First built in 1228, it used to be the commercial and political hub of the city and this is reflected in the buildings and statues of the square and immediate surrounding streets.

7

Ride the Tour Bus

More often than not, city breaks tend to be shorter than main vacations and this makes seeing everything you want to see a difficult task. Although it will never be as good as visiting all the individual attractions of Milan, a city tour by bus is a really terrific way to see the main sights. In just a few hours you get to see some great places, have the facts and features of interest pointed out to you and you don’t have to move, other than to shift in your seat to get a better view. Plus, if you really want to stop at any particular place, city tours are usually hop-on, hop-off.

8

Take a Stroll along the Canals of Navigli

When you think of Italy and canals, no doubt it’s Venice that comes to mind. But, Milan too, has a small network of canals and the area of Navilgi is one of the quieter more peaceful parts of the city. One of the canals was in fact designed by Leonardo da Vinci and in the summer time, there are boat trips to be enjoyed. The banks are lined with shops, small cafes and restaurants and Navigli has a great atmosphere day time and evening.

It was hard to narrow down the list of things to do in Milan. I didn’t get to mention that you can see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper at the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, or that you can see masters of Italian painting at Pinacoteca di Brera, or that you can escape the bustle of the city in some glorious parks, or take an aperitvo tour. If you get to go to this fabulous Italian city, plan your trip carefully, as there really are plenty of attractions in Milan.

Sooooo...gonna start saving for a trip to Milan now!

I want to go to Milan to shop! I'm a sneaker head, NY and Californian style, but I've also been digging the classy, chic, and sophisticated - the type of style Londoners have.

So many activities are missing here.... Eat an ice cream in colonne Di San Lorenzo, the planetarium and its relaxing park... If you need anything just ask. I love my town Milano!!!!
