Singapore

Singapore Singapore is a true Asian delight. It is a wonderful melee of Chinese, Malay, Indian and old colonial British. It lacks the chaos of other major Asian cities. Thanks to tight government controls, everything has a squeaky-clean feel; no traffic jams, public transport runs on time and streets are rubbish free. But sterility doesn’t mean lack of excitement. Singapore is one of the must see places in Asia for shopaholics and foodies. The cuisine is superb and the shopping, probably even better. At the end of a day feasting and buying, pull up a chair on the verandah of the iconic Raffles Hotel and sink a pink gin or two.

2

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Mongolia For somewhere totally off the beaten track, this is one of the top attractions of Asia. Altai Tavan Bodg is a stunningly beautiful national park. It lies in Western Mongolia, and its impressive snow-capped peaks form the border with China and Russia. It’s hard to find superlatives to describe its beauty. The mountains, glaciers, its three lakes, rivers and valleys, have been painted with Mother Nature’s very best brush. Not for the fainthearted as there are no hotels here, but the park is an adventure playground par excellence for horse riders, 4x4 drivers, kayakers and hikers.

3

Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

Phi Phi Islands, Thailand There are many incredibly beautiful islands in Asia, and all are probably worthy of the accolade, top places to visit in Asia, but for many, heading the list are the Phi Phi Islands (pronounced pee-pee). Two majestic limestone monoliths rise from the azure waters of the Andaman Sea and present visitors with sweeps of white sand beaches, crystal waters and dramatic cliffs as a backdrop. The Phi Phis are a paradise for sun seekers and divers. Thankfully, even though the islands were popularized by the movie, The Beach, they are still unspoilt and completely gorgeous.

4

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat, Cambodia A great number of the top Asia sights are ancient temples. Some of them are fairly inaccessible, hidden in jungles or on mountain terraces, but others have been made reachable thanks to the tightening grip of tourism. Even though some of these top attractions of Asia have had a little polish rubbed off by the introduction of cafes, restaurants, gifts shops et al, their magnificence remains. Angkor Wat is the daddy of them all. The biggest Buddhist temple complex in the world, it actually started as a Hindu temple. It’s hard to describe it in words as it is a completely awe-inspiring, unique building of towers, galleries and carved walls.

Cherry Blossoms in Tokyo

img.allw.mn

Sometimes, some of the greatest pleasures are the simplest. Japan at cherry blossom time presents some fabulous sights and make for some of the top attractions in Asia. Some pretty ordinary places are transformed into fairytale landscapes as the cherry trees burst into bloom. Tokyo has literally thousands of trees and in places where they are lined up close together, there is an absolute riot of flowering. Some of the top places to be in cherry blossom season in Tokyo are Chidorigafuchi Ryokudo (best viewed from a boat on the river), Asukayama Park (one of the more traditional viewing areas) and Sumida Park. Of course, the fact that you’re in Tokyo is a major upside. The Japanese capital could easily feature on any list of top places in Asia, cherry blossoms or not.

Kaziranga and Manas National Parks, India

Kaziranga and Manas National Parks, India Kaziranga and Manas National Parks are both World Heritage Sites in the State of Assam, in the extreme east of India. They are top places in Asia to see wildlife and nature. The breathtaking scenery is anchored by the River Bhrahmaputra which is flanked by the lush tea growing plantations, and areas tight with tall elephant grass. The parks are two of the most important wildlife areas in India, and are home to the One-horned Rhino – in fact, two-thirds of the world’s total population of this magnificent beast lives here. They co-habit nicely with buffalo, deer, elephants, red pandas, pygmy hogs and a whole host of many other animal and birds. If you ever had a hankering to view wildlife, here you can do it on an elephant safari (or a jeep, if you prefer).

Hoi an, Vietnam

Hoi an, Vietnam Hoi An is a veritable Vietnamese beauty – she doesn’t need make up, it’s all natural. This Unesco World Heritage Site is primped, manicured and dressed, and is waiting to be discovered. This is a city on a river, close to a great beach, offers a busy port and plenty of winding lanes to be explored. Hoi An is beguiling, charming, charismatic and historical. It is a town of tailors, so if you want some exquisite handmade clothes, this is the place to head for. The Old Town is a gem – no cars here. Motorbikes are allowed, except for one day every full moon when the streets are dressed up for celebrations. Light comes from hosts of silk lanterns and the air is filled with song, dance, games and the heady aroma of delicious food. (Dining is quite outstanding in Hoi An at anytime). Hoi An is definitely one of the top attractions in Asia – as of yet it is mainly undiscovered so get there before McDonalds moves in.

I’m sure now you’ve read this you’ll be wondering about the many must see places in Asia that haven’t been included. Well I did say at the outset that it was going to be a difficult job. I was never going to please everyone but hopefully you’ve found some pleasure in the ones I have picked. Of course, you’re welcome to share your top sights of Asia with us.
