7 Immaculate Italian Beaches for La Dolce Vita ...

In contrast to the fairly easy-going life elsewhere, Italian beaches are highly organized and strictly controlled. Many stretches are owned by hotels and are lined with so many sun beds and umbrellas (all of which are charged for), that the beauty of the beach is lost. With reference to a couple I remember and some searching, I have found some of the less-developed Italian beaches where you won’t need to fight for space and where the scenery is how Mother Nature intended.

Torre Guaceto in Puglia

Torre Guaceto in Puglia If you like your Italian beaches kind of on the wild side, you’ll love Torre Guaceto in Brindisi, one of Puglia’s main tourist towns. Torre Guaceto sits in a nature reserve and is in a protected marine area so you won’t find the tourist development that is so prevalent along the surrounding coastline. The beach is sandy with large rocky outcrops and the water is clean and warm as well as being clear enough for snorkeling or scuba diving over the small coral reefs and beds of sea grass. There’s a small refreshment stand and the visitor center at Serranova (about 2 miles away) organizes nature tours, including guided snorkeling tours. There’s also a small museum at the center and a restaurant.

Castrocucco in Basilicata

Castrocucco in Basilicata When something bears the name the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian,” it raises expectations. Maratea doesn’t disappoint. There’s only a small stretch of the province of Basilicata with a Tyrrhenian coastline and Maratea Riviera is ravishing. There are tall sheer cliffs towering over rocky coves and grey sand beaches. If you don’t want to spend your time exploring the 50 or so grottoes, take time to relax on the fine sands of Castrocucco Beach, which is overlooked by the small town’s ancient castle.

Anzio in Lazio

Anzio in Lazio Anzio is one of the most famous beaches in Italy. It was the scene of heavy fighting when the Americans landed in 1944 to battle the occupying German forces. It is only 38 miles from Rome, so its strategic position back then has become its advantage today. And the history is not restricted to WWII and the sprawling cemeteries of troops lost in the fighting. Roman Emperor Nero had his summer villa at Anzio and the ruins of his home are spread across the cliff tops above the town. Anzio is a busy place, being a port for the islands across the bay, but the beach is lovely. At one end are rocky caves that formed part of Nero’s party house complex and there is an area where sun beds and umbrellas are for hire, but it is also long enough for you to find a nice secluded area to top up your tan.

4

Fornillo in Campania

Fornillo in Campania Positano is home to two Italian beaches that are beloved by the glitterati. Sitting on the breathtaking Amalfi coastline, the small town is an absolute charm. The larger beach is Spiaggia Grande and is beautiful but I preferred Fornillo. It is more secluded and the atmosphere more laid back. There are delightful bar/restaurants and the views are breathtaking. It can be reached via the main beach or by the stairs that lead from the grotto above.

Marettimo in Sicily

Marettimo in Sicily Some of the most gorgeous beaches of Italy are to be found in Sicily and it’s so hard to pick a best one. If, however, you venture over to the tiny island of Marettimo off Sicily’s west coast, you only have one beach to choose. Not that it matters. The island is remarkably green and car-free and a haven for walkers, divers and sun seekers. The beach lies south of the main town and is a stretch of pebble strewn sand that slopes gently into the crystalline waters. You can also sunbathe and swim from numerous rock perches all around the island and in the sea caves where the natural light shows are spectacular.

Riomaggiore in Liguria

Riomaggiore in Liguria If you like French Riviera beaches, you’ll love the Italian beaches of the “Cinque Terre” – five towns in Liguria on the stretch of coast known as the Italian Riviera. Riomaggiore is a historic village dating back to the 13th century, is dreamy with steep narrow streets and pastel colored houses and is surrounded by national parks and forest. The beach is bijou and pretty with fascinating rocky cliffs. Swimming is safe in the clear water and you’ll always find a rock on which to stretch out a beach towel for catching the sun.

7

Cala Piccola in Tuscany

Cala Piccola in Tuscany If Tuscany to you means rolling hills and gentle agricultural landscapes, you’ll be surprised by the rocky haven that is Cala Piccola. Tuscany isn’t generally thought of for the beaches of Italy and the spectacular coastline often gets overlooked. One of its gems is the peninsula of Monte Argentario, which thanks to three spits of land connecting it to the mainland, can boast of two lagoons where the waters are a color that have to be seen to be believed. Cala Piccola is one of its smallest beaches. In a rocky cove with bright aquamarine water, all there is to do here is to enjoy the sun and the superb snorkeling.

As a long narrow country with plenty of coastline and loads of islands, there’s a ton of Italian beaches to choose from so there’s bound to be one that appeals most to you. Do you have a favorite?
