1

Italy

The boot-shaped country has long been a favourite among honeymooners. It has everything: historical architecture and art, beautiful cities with even more beautiful people, sunny beaches, scenic countryside and food that will make you never want to leave again. A stroll through the streets of Rome to the Trevi Fountain, location of the iconic scene from La Dolce Vita, will be burnt into your memory as much as gliding down the canals of Venice in a gondola. Travel agents offer special Italian honeymoon packages for every budget and to suit all your holiday needs.

2

Buenos Aires

Paris is the ultimate romantic city for a honeymoon but hot on its heels is Buenos Aires, the ‘Paris of South America’. The Argentinian capital brims with sophistication: This is, after all, the city with the world’s highest concentration of theatres. By day, the streets lined with coffee shops, designer boutiques and beautiful architecture are just begging to be explored. Come nightfall, however, it’s time for a dinner of steak and red wine before you go dancing. Buenos Aires is the birthplace of one of the world’s most intoxicating dances, the tango and if you don’t know the steps, you’ll find plenty of tango schools where you can learn.

The city has many hotels that offer special deals for honeymooning couples and will even arrange romantic activities and outings for you. The best thing about Buenos Aires as a honeymoon destination? It’s not nearly as expensive as Paris!

3

Tanzania

This East African country offers something for everyone who wants to get in touch with their wild side. Tanzania’s most famous attraction is the Serengeti National Park where the annual wildebeest migration takes place but the country also has several other national parks where you can spot everything from giraffe to lions and elephants. For instance, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area borders on the Serengeti. There are safari lodges to suit every kind of budget dotted around the country and most offer special honeymoon packages. Cocktails on the banks of a river while watching the African sunset or a hot-air balloon trip over the Ngorongoro Crater is an experience you’ll never forget.

There are Masai villages in or close to many of the national parks and you can visit these for a taste of a very different culture. Another cultural gem in Tanzania is the island of Zanzibar, where the stunning Arabic architecture of Stone Town alludes to the archipelago’s long history as trade centre. Because of the cultivation of spices on the bigger islands, there is the heady scent of cloves and vanilla in the air. Zanzibar also has some of the most idyllic beaches in Africa.

The Mafia Island Marine Park offers palm-fringed beaches, warm and clear waters and excellent diving away from the crowds. There are only a limited number of lodges to stay at, meaning that it’s quite easy to find a secluded spot to … relax. Your lodge may also offer complementary dhow trips that will add some extra romance to your honeymoon.

4

Thailand

Beach and scuba-diving destinations abound and some, like Bora Bora in French Polynesia, specialise in wedding and honeymoon packages. However, Thailand not only offers beautiful beaches and underwater worlds to explore, but also adds a touch of the exotic that you won’t find in many other destinations. The food is spicy and fragrant, the clothing is bright and colourful and the nightlife might open your eyes to a world you’ve never known existed.

If you need to get away from the frenetic pace of cities like Bangkok, Thailand has some of the best spa packages imaginable. Spa and wellness centres are everywhere: in the mountains, the jungle, near the beaches and right in the middle of the cities. Let your body be pampered with a Thai massage and deliciously aromatic oils and lotions to get you in just the mood for a romantic evening with your new significant other.

5

Nicaragua

While Costa Rica is one of the world’s top ecotourism and adventure-holiday destinations, neighbouring Nicaragua has everything Costa Rica has to offer but with much fewer tourists. Secluded lodges in the jungle or mountains, along the Rio San Juan and at the country’s beaches make a great base for kayaking, bird-watching, a hike up a volcano, a visit to a coffee plantation or simply for relaxing in a hammock big enough for two. The Corn Islands offer a tropical island getaway with great diving and very affordable PADI courses in a typical Caribbean setting and are some of the best places to enjoy Nicaragua’s delicious rum.

If you want a serious adrenalin rush, you’ll find zipline tours dotted all around the country. Nicaragua also offers the unique opportunity to go volcano-boarding: similar to sandboarding but down the black lava slopes of a volcano.

For a few nights in the city, head to the colonial cities of Granada and Leon. Here you can wander along the cobbled streets and explore the many churches and museums. The nightlife burns with Latin fire and you’ll have no trouble finding a club where you can salsa the night away.
