One of the great joys in life has to be driving fast (within the limits, naturally) and listening to loud music as you drive. Many of us have our favourite driving music, so I’ve compiled my own list of great driving songs. What do you think of this lot?
1. Where’s Your Head at – Basement Jaxx
Another great joy of listening to music while driving fast is that you can sing along at the top of your voice without annoying the neighbours or getting strange looks from the person sitting next to you at the traffic lights. This is definitely a ‘top of your voice’ song!
2. Pobre Compa - Akwid
If they ever made a Spanish version of ‘Wayne’s World’, this would be the equivalent of the scene where they headbang to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. It’s got that head-nodding quality about it …
3. Hush – Joe South
This song has been covered by Deep Purple and Kula Shakur, but this is the original, and my favourite version. You may remember the Kula Shakur version from ‘I know what you did last summer’.
4. Never Win - Fischerspooner
This is quite different from the other songs – kind of electro. With its rhythm, it’s really good for tapping the steering wheel and yes, indulging in a little bit of nodding (if not quite headbanging).
Here’s a lesser known instrumental by Serge Gainsbourg, which for me makes a great driving song because it is quite lively (and a bit trippy). It’s the kind of song for rolling down the window on a warm day and leaning with your elbow on the window.
6. Comprendes Mendes
This slice of Mexican hip-hop by Control Machete is a great song for turning up the volume and shouting along. It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the lyrics, just sing along phonetically.
7. Werewolves of London – Warren Zevon
I love dancing to this song as well, even if it isn’t an obvious song for dancing too. In the car, you can also howl along to the werewolf sounds – nobody is going to notice!
8. Walk This Way – Run DMC/Aerosmith
One of the greatest msical collaborations, EVER! The video is fantastic as well – the look on Steve Tyler’s face when he gets interrupted is priceless.
9. Mala Gente - Juanes
Another of my favourite dancing songs, this song is fast-paced enough to be great for driving to. Driving music does need to be quite lively! Have a listen.
10. Monster – Henry Rollins
Play it, and play it LOUD! This is the sort of song that makes you want to ‘pimp your ride’ and drive around looking tough. Which might not be terribly convincing, but great song anyway.
Now it’s your turn to share some of your favourite driving songs with us!
