New Cultures

There’s nothing more beautiful in life than seeing and experiencing new cultures in different countries. When we travel in our home country, we might see new sceneries, but we’ll always be blessed with being able to speak the same language. Traveling abroad will let you get acquainted with other cultures that are extremely different from your own. Before you know it, you’ll have no problem communicating with those whose language you don’t speak. Experiencing new cultures, and trying to understand them, is something special and one of the best reasons why traveling makes you richer as a person.

2

You Will Grow as a Person

When you’re traveling abroad, you will grow as a person and you will learn so many things that can’t be found in any books. You might think you know yourself pretty well, but once you’re on the road, you will develop skills that you never thought you had. Some of these skills or characteristics are good, but others may be less fun to deal with. For example, you might find out that you don’t like to be alone, or that you miss eating a home cooked meal, and maybe you will get homesick. All of these things will teach you about yourself and over time you will learn how to deal with these things.

3

You Will Create New Friendships

Having your family and friends back home is priceless and you know they will always be there for you, but meeting new people from different cultures will give your life a new dimension. While traveling, you’ll meet people from all over the world and you’ll find yourself spending nights in bars or restaurants, talking about each other’s cultures and traditions. More often than not, the friendships that you create on your travels will last forever, because even though you are all very different as a person, you have your journey in common. Building new friendships with people abroad can also be extremely beneficial in case you plan to visit them in their home country, and it’s also a lot of fun inviting your friends from abroad over to your home country.

4

It Puts Life in Perspective

Most of us are blessed with a comfortable life in a comfortable home and all the luxuries around us. Traveling puts life in a whole different perspective, because you will see how people live their lives in other countries. You will see poverty, wealth, sorrow and happiness in a different way to back home, reminding you to be thankful for what you have, yet showing compassion to the locals you will meet along the way. It’s a beautiful experience, but it can also be a reality shock, especially if you’ve never seen life in other countries.

5

You Challenge Yourself

Some people think of traveling as nothing but having fun, but it’s also hard work for you as a person. Traveling enables you to keep challenging yourself and to put yourself outside of your comfort zone. Even if you don’t like to be challenged every single day, traveling will leave you with new choices. After all, staying in your hotel room won't get you anywhere. On your travels, you will experience and see something new every day and you will feel that you have overcome a new challenge when you go to sleep every night.

You Can Help Others

Many people are involved in some kind of charity, whether it’s donating money every month, helping those in need during the holidays or volunteering one night a week. One of the best things about traveling is that you can help others in another country. There are many volunteering opportunities abroad and although some require a minimum commitment of a few weeks, there are also opportunities out there that are happy to receive help for a few days or a week. Being able to help others in a different country is a beautiful experience that is nothing like helping those in your home country. Don’t get me wrong though, volunteering is good no matter where you are, so whatever it is that you’re doing back home: keep up the good work.

7

You Will Live with Less

Unfortunately, traveling is not cheap and to travel for a longer period, you’ll need a big pile of money. Because of this, you will learn how to live with less. Yes, there’s a beautiful seaside hotel just around the corner, but you’ll find that it’s OK to stay at that cheap hostel behind it. Also, having nothing but your suitcase or backpack forces you to live with fewer things, which might sound frightening at first, but is extremely liberating once you get the hang of it.

I can think of so many reasons why traveling makes you a richer person and these were just a few of them. Personally, I think everyone should travel around at least once in their lives, if circumstances allow it, and after your first journey you’ll find that it’s even somewhat addictive. This can also be a pitfall, as normal life could kick in even harder than it did before. Nevertheless, if you manage to keep a healthy balance, traveling is one of the best things there is in life. What do you hope to learn from your travels in life?
