The Clinic, Singapore

The Clinic, Singapore Exactly as the name describes, the Clinic is a hospital themed pub, fully kitted out with wheelchairs for chairs and steel operating tables for well, tables. If you order food, it will be served in a steel kidney shaped bowl. Order your drinks and sip from IV bags and test tubes. If you are feeling a little full after dinner, you can lie down on a white hospital bed and draw the hospital curtains closed around you until you regain your energy, and feel like going to boogie on the dance floor in the nightclub called Morphine.

2

The Icebar, Sweden

The Icebar, Sweden Nestled right inside the Ice Hotel (yes really) in the small town of Jukkasjarvi, in Sweden, is one of the most acclaimed weird bars, the orginal Absolut Ice Bar. With everything made entirely from ice, don’t expect that you will be staying long, unless the drinks do the job of warming you up from the inside out. Even the glasses are made of ice. Sip your vodka cocktail out of an ice cocktail glass and try and not get it stuck to your lips, or your gloves which you will need to be wearing. Open during the winter months, you can really enjoy your chilly experience, just dress very warmly.

The Red Sea Star Underwater Bar, Restaurant and Observatory –Israel

The Red Sea Star Underwater Bar, Restaurant and Observatory –Israel Now if there was ever a completely unique bar to visit, this must be it. Watch the marine life float by you as you sit comfortably, cocktail in hand no less than 6 metres under the sea. The vibrant decor shaped and colored like the bright coral reef around you, comes complete with sea anemone shaped seats and sea urchin cushions. With strong plexiglass keeping you dry, from either side of the restaurant and above, you can enjoy an unparalleled view of the sea around you.

4

Bojangles, Australia

Bojangles, Australia Nothing says quirky like this weird bar in Alice Springs right smack in the middle of Australia. Everybody travelling through the red centre of Oz, on their way to Uluru, needs to stop in and pay a visit to this peculiar little establishment. The attention to detail may not be so apparent after a few cold ones, so be sure to take the full tour before you get down to any serious drinking. With the only rules being that there are absolutely no rules, you can be 100% sure that the later it gets here, the more interesting it is going to get. Look around and you will see snakes in tanks, boots hanging from the ceiling and even a coffin with a suit of armour inside with a sign that says ‘’How much to touch Ned’s nuts?” If you go to the bathroom and wash your hands, you could be in for a shock; each tap opens the water in another sink.

5

DM Bar, Estonia

DM Bar, Estonia DM stands for Depeche Mode, yes really, and this oddity among unique bars is a shrine totally dedicated to the band, Depeche Mode. Located in the capital city of Tallinn in Estonia, this unusual dedication is massively popular with the locals. The walls are covered with memorabilia and the pop band from the UK is splashed all over the walls, with records, pictures, signed photographs, posters and just about any branding from the band mounted on every surface. All the songs on the play list are exclusively from Depeche Mode, of course that goes without saying. Even 2 band members from Depeche Mode, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher, have spent an evening to remember at the bar, partying the night away.

Baobab Bar, South Africa

Baobab Bar, South Africa Make no mistake, the South Africans know how to throw a party, and in true South African style they decided to have a few parties inside a tree. Not the most run of the mill place to open a bar, but when the van Heerdens discovered this 6000 year old Baobab tree, on their farm in Limpopo Province, they decided, why the hell not. 75m high, the inside of the quirky bar can take up to 40 people inside, and the natural ventilation keeps the heat from the Highveld away from your beer. Originally opened for the thirsty locals, tourists are coming from all over the world to enjoy a frosty one here inside a tree.

Skeleton Bar – Switzerland

Skeleton Bar – Switzerland Not for the faint hearted, this horror movie set slash museum slash really bizarre bar, is beyond peculiar, but very different. Designed by the set designer for the Alien movies (need we say more?), the Swiss Oscar winning designer, Hans Rudi Giger, has decorated the entire drinking hole with bones from skeletons. Sit on skeleton bone chairs, lean up against bone walls, and enjoy the flowers on your table in the skeleton vases. If you are visiting Gruyere in Switzerland, and you have the stomach for this one, they serve alcohol so that might help; this is one stop you have to make!

Floyd’s Pelican Bar, Jamaica

Floyd’s Pelican Bar, Jamaica Like something out of a Caribbean dream, this apparition off Parottee Bay is just a mile off the coastline of South Jamaica. Get a local fisherman to take you down there, and as you get closer you will see the coolest place in all of the Caribbean, made entirely out of old palm leaves and some driftwood. Carve your name in the floor, snorkel around before lunch, and enjoy fresh lobster made by none other than Floyd himself. Wash it down with an ice cold beer and paradise is made.
