Must-See Museums around the World ...

There are so many must-see museums around the world. Museums house collections of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical or scientific significance. And they have varying goals ranging from serving researchers to entertaining the general public. Visiting museums is one of my favorite past times and I recently became a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Since they opened their doors in 1880, they have presented more than 5,000 years of art spanning almost all cultures and time periods. Do you enjoy going to museums? Well, here is my list of must-see museums around the world:

1

Tokugawa Art Museum (Japan)

The Tokugawa family ruled Japan from 1600 – 1868. This was the Edo period, the longest period of peace, during which the arts flourished. Many Japanese artists influenced Western masters including Gaugin and Manet during this time. Several of the exhibits present contextualized aspects of past Japanese life. This one definitely tops my list of must-see museums around the world.

2

Museo Nacional Del Prado (Spain)

This is the main Spanish national art museum and is located in Madrid. It has one of the world’s best collections of European art from the 12th to 19th centuries. The masters Velasquez and Goya are very well represented at the Prado.

3

The Museum of Modern Art (New York)

The extraordinary exhibitions and collection of modern and contemporary art at MoMA are dedicated to helping you understand and enjoy the art of our time. The museum is often identified as one of the largest and most influential museums of modern art in the world and their library includes approximately 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs.

4

The National Archaeological Museum (Greece)

NAM holds the most spectacular collection of Ancient Greek art in the world. Its abundant collections provide a panorama of Greek civilization from the beginnings of Prehistory to Late Antiquity. A notable sculpture there is the 5th-century B.C. Bronze Zeus.

5

Vatican City (Italy)

Vatican City is actually a city-state, but it is also home to some of the finest Italian works of art from the Renaissance and High Renaissance. Michelangelo designed the dome and Bernini created the portico of this amazing structure. There are tens of thousands of works on display throughout the 1,400 rooms!
