8 Great Reasons to Visit Belgrade ...

Unlike most European capitals, one of the reasons to visit Belgrade is certainly not its astounding urban beauty. Belgrade – the capital of Serbia – has somewhat suffered from an unhappy mating of antique buildings and horrid grey Soviet Bloc concrete constructions. But, it does sit on a major river and it boasts a very happening cultural scene. There are some gems in its sights and attractions, but Belgrade is really a city to experience rather than see. The reasons to visit Belgrade are more than a list of attractions to tick off.

The BIGZ Building

The BIGZ Building One of Belgrade’s most well-known architectural landmarks and the city’s unofficial art hub, the BIGZ building, with its graffiti covered halls and towering form, seems an unlikely tourist attraction. Complete with music and art studios, radio stations, night clubs and a jazz club, however, this towering beast of a building is a must see. History buffs may also find the elaborate history of the structure one of the compelling reasons to visit Belgrade – despite the fact that it really is a quite ugly building.

2

Dorćol

Dorćol Shopping is generally not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of reasons to go to Belgrade, but perhaps it should be, with the neighborhood of Dorćol offering fantastic brand name shopping coupled with trendy cafes. The nightlife in the area is also amazing, drawing the young rich crowd, although the prices in the area are still surprisingly moderate. If you’re more interested in sightseeing than shopping and partying, however, the area still has a lot to offer, with a new marina and the Belgrade Zoo and Belgrade Fortress being only a stone’s throw away.

3

The Festivals

The Festivals One of the top attractions of Belgrade would have to be the festivals, whether it be music, fashion, food, drink, films, theatre or literature. The most famous festival, however, is the Belgrade Beer Fest, which attracts over 500,000 visitors to the city every August. The popularity of this five day celebration is easily understood, as it offers free entrance, great music and amazing beer, and is a very different type of beer festival to those in Germany.

4

The Splavs

The Splavs If you‘re looking to party you need look no further than Belgrade’s "Splavs," which are basically nightclubs accommodated in large barges anchored on the Sava and Danube Rivers. The venues vary with respect to dress code, music and price, although you are guaranteed to have a ball dancing your way from one location to the next. If you are looking for some of the top places to go in Belgrade, the Splavs may just be it, as they are certainly a once in a lifetime experience!

5

The House of Flowers

The House of Flowers The House of Flowers, located on the Museum of Yugoslav History grounds, is a mausoleum which houses the tomb of the former Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito. As the museum holds a collection of gifts, which Tito received whilst in power, the two attractions are best visited together to get a real feel for the political history of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Visitors to the Museum of Yugoslav History may also be interested in exploring their other superb permanent and temporary exhibits, all of which are conveniently explained in English

Savamala

Savamala For many tourists, one of the reasons to visit Belgrade is to simply to meander through the bustling streets soaking up the culture and for this, Savamala is perfect. Savamala, which borders the right bank of the Sava River, is said to be Belgrade’s oldest neighborhood. And, be prepared – it is very shabby in places, really showing sign of its age, but that just adds to the Boho feel because recently, the area has begun to reinvent itself. It is now thought of as Belgrade’s creative hub, boasting galleries, exhibits, concerts and film screenings amongst a mountain of other artistic happenings.

7

The Sava River

The Sava River One of the longest rivers in Europe, and tributary to the eminent Danube River, the Sava River runs directly through Belgrade, dividing the “Old” side of the city from the “New.” The winding paved path stretching along both sides of the river consequently provides holiday makers with the perfect opportunity to explore all that Belgrade has to offer, whether it be walking, or by bicycle. Regardless of what travelers are interested in, however, the area around the Sava has it all, from pumping nightlife to homey cafes and gourmet restaurants.

8

The Cathedral of St. Sava

The Cathedral of St. Sava Located in the city centre, the Cathedral of St Sava is one of the top sights of Belgrade and is hard to miss, owing to the fact that it stands over 70 meters high, can hold over 10,000 people, and is made of shining white marble. The area around the Cathedral, which consists of a large shaded area with a fountain and plenty of trees, is also an extremely popular place to relax in the summer for locals and international tourists alike.

The reasons to visit Belgrade are interesting and varied, and this city is probably one of the most ignored on the European tourism map, but if you’re looking for some real Eastern European flavor, you can’t go wrong here. What's your favorite reason to visit?
