Full Moon Party – Koh Phangan, Thailand Don’t know what to expect at a full moon party in Thailand? Medieval Festival- Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy

Medieval Festival- Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy Taking place on the 2nd last Saturday in June and the first Sunday in September every year, the Medieval Festival is an extravagant and magical tribute to the life and times of the Middle Ages. The entire region of Arezzo comes to life as a medieval town, as the buildings and the people go all out to recreate those not so ancient times. Part of the celebrations is a parade from the cathedral that is led by the provincial bishop in Arezzo, it then makes its way to the Grande Piazza to be followed by the very exciting jousting event later that afternoon.

World Body Painting Festival –Austria

World Body Painting Festival –Austria Europe has plenty of weird celebrations and the 2012 summer festivals don’t disappoint on that front. Held during July every year in the small town of Seeboden in Lake Worthersee in Austria, the World Body Painting Festival is an artistic feast for the eyes. With more than 20 workshops showcasing their skills, and loads of people performing in various Cirque De Soleil shows, the little Austrian town becomes a small metropolis full of naked, painted people. Music, photography, fireworks, stalls, UV shows, competitions, electro-music DJs and more, make this a week to remember.

Spice Mas –Grenada, West Indies

Spice Mas –Grenada, West Indies We know the Caribbean nations know how to throw a party and there are certainly plenty of summer festivals 2012, around the islands. This fantastic carnival is held on the second weekend of August every year on the beautiful island of Grenada. Although, weekend is a loose description, with festivities carrying on for well over a week. Starting with evening shows, such as Soca, the Wednesday before, Grenada is an explosion of parades, bands, over the top costumes, beauty pageants, fetes, shows and body painting all week long. Safe and fun, the revelry is electric and you can even turn it into a 2 week party by starting with the Carriacou Regatta the weekend before.

Elvis Week –Memphis, Tennessee, USA

Elvis Week –Memphis, Tennessee, USA A true testament to the King of Rock ‘n Roll, the Elvis Festival started out as a humble tribute to the King way back in 1978. Since then, it has grown leaps and bounds, with Elvis fans from all over the world descending on Memphis in the middle of August. Hamburger Dom Beer Festival –Germany

Hamburger Dom Beer Festival –Germany Nothing quite says summer festivals 2012 like a German beer festival. With nothing quite like it and bringing more people, culture and nationalities together than anything in the world, the sheer charm of the beer festivals in Germany have trickled all throughout the world, with German beer festivals being held all over the globe. There isn’t anything quite like those held on German soil though. Litres and litres of foamy beer, dancing, singing, eating and celebrations are the name of the game. Pack your dancing shoes and an extra liver.

7

Running the Bulls, Pamplona, Spain

Running the Bulls, Pamplona, Spain Probably one of most famous 2012 summer events is the annual Running the Bulls in the Spanish town of Pamplona, at the San Fermin Festival. Held in mid-July, the streets are packed with people in white clothing with red scarves (innocence and blood?) and then a herd of bulls are let loose. It’s a mad dash as to who can reach the bullring first. A truly amazing spectacle that has to be experienced – but from a viewing standpoint only!

8

Seven Sisters Festival, Hong Kong

Seven Sisters Festival, Hong Kong This wonderful event is the Asian version of Valentine’s Day. Girls are given the chance to show off their skills to prove their worth to potential suitors. Talents on show include weaving, cooking, scroll painting and other traditional crafts. The girls also make food and flower offerings to the stars from rooftops and gardens, but the most popular place is Lover’s Stone, located on Bowen Road, Wan Chai. The festival takes place on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month – usually around 4th to 10th August.

9

Air Guitar Festival, Oulu, Finland

Air Guitar Festival, Oulu, Finland If you’re a secret air-guitarist, there’s only one of the 2012 summer festivals you can consider your own. The Air Guitar festival is a 3 day extravaganza of competitions, workshops and demonstrations. Feeling brave? Think you’ve got it in you to compete? There are qualifying rounds before the main event, but be warned – some of the international competitors ‘train’ every day. If you fancy plucking some invisible strings with a mass of airheads oops air-guitarists, book your flight to Finland for the third week of August.

10

Notting Hill Carnival, London, England

Notting Hill Carnival, London, England The streets of Notting Hill are filled with floats, dancers, entertainers, musicians and there’s a riot of color. There’s only one thing missing from the archetypal carnival, and that is sunshine. Even though the event takes place over August Bank Holiday weekend, the English weather doesn’t always behave. It doesn’t matter if it rains though, this is the biggest of all the UK’s summer festivals 2012, and even lashing rain doesn’t bother the participants and watching crowds.

Wherever you are in the world, there is bound to be some fabulous 2012 summer festivals near you.
