Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Illinois The Chinatown neighborhood celebrated its 100th birthday just a few years ago, and it’s still going strong. With over 10,000 community members it lends itself to a formidable New Year’s celebration. In 2019, the annual celebration will be as spectacular as previous years with the Argyle Street Lunar New Year Parade on Saturday, February 9 and the Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade on Sunday, February 10 (complete with a dragon dance). The festivities will include special performances, cultural events including a special Symphony concert and Lantern Festival, and delicious goodies.

Washington, DC

Washington, DC Chinatown is a vibrant area of the nation's capital and the celebrations are always high quality and entertaining. Various art and cultural centers hold special Chinese New Year events but the main festivity is the Lunar New Year Parade which takes place on February 10th. The event features the traditional Chinese Dragon Dance, Kung Fu demonstrations and live musical entertainment. The firecrackers will be lit at 3:45 p.m.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas, Nevada Although Las Vegas hasn’t been big on celebrating Chinese New Year in the past (2019 will only be its 8th year), it only makes sense to celebrate this cultural event since China is the city’s largest source of Asian visitors. The Chinese New Year in the Desert kicks off before and on February 4th this year, and will be held in multiple locations throughout the week. All the major strip hotels have events marking the Year of the Dog and participating venues include Le Cordon Bleu School, the LINQ Promenade, the Fashion Show Mall, Downtown Container Park, the Forum Shops, and the Las Vegas Natural History Museum.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts Chinatown in Boston is centrally located and is the third largest in the US. The annual Chinese New Year parade is one of the biggest events in the city and kicks off sometime after 11am. There will be lots of activities but on February 17th local businesses hang fruits and vegetables in their doorways in anticipation of the “lions” that will soon come heading the parade to investigate the food offerings. Also in the parade are numerous dancers and kung fu performances. The surrounding area holds many opportunities for sampling delicious fare.

San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California Home to the largest Chinatown in the US, it’s no surprise that it’s also home to the nation’s largest Chinese New Year parade. Starting in the 1860s, it may also be one of the longest-running Chinese celebrations as well. With up to 5,000 performers, this illuminated parade features dancers, martial arts performers, and an over 200’ dragon that’s operated by 100 people. The event attracts more than a million visitors along its route. Other attractions include the Miss Chinatown USA pageant, a concert by the San Francisco Symphony, and a Chinese New Year flower market. Join the other 1600 people who participate in the Lunar New Year Treasure Hunt.

Los Angeles, California L.A’s 119th Golden Dragon Parade will be held on February 16th this year, but the celebrations last about 2 weeks. Not only do the celebrations have a Chinatown flavor, but they also reflect the unique culture of L.A., complete with indie bands, beer gardens, and gourmet food trucks. The Golden Dragon Parade features up to two dozen floats and marching bands, along with entertainers, government officials, visiting dignitaries, and business leaders. Other Chinese New Year events include a midnight temple ceremony and an Undiscovered Chinatown tour.

New York, New York At nearly ½ million people, New York has the largest Chinese-American population in the U.S. The annual schedule of festivals includes three distinct attractions. There is the Firecracker Display Festival, igniting more than 500,000 firecrackers; there’s the Chinese New Year Parade; then the Lantern Festival. The firecracker festival features drumming, dancing, and of course, lots of fireworks. The annual event kicks off on February 2nd at 5pm. The Chinese New Year celebration features plenty of fun for the whole family, with food, activities, and entertainment. The 2019 Narcissus Queen and her court will be making the rounds in Chinatown wishing people luck for the new year. Of course, traditional lion dancers will also be in attendance.

Concerts and Galas are held in various locations and big restaurants host lion dances and other spectacles while you eat dinner.
